Lenovo is already the world's top PC maker in terms of shipments and sales, and once it closes the deal with IBM for its server division, the Chinese company will become the third largest player in the global x86 server market. It's being called a worse threat than Heartbleed, but unlike Heartbleed, "Shellshock" can affect home users just as well as servers. The bug is tied to the Bash Unix shell, one that's pretty much de facto in Linux, and can be found in all Mac OS X releases. While you'll be in a Bash environment whenever you open up a terminal, there are many cases where Bash will run in the background as well - such as with SSH, which constantly listens for connections. Applied Micro is betting big on microserver use in the HPC market, and to help things along, it's just begun shipping its new X-Gene processors, based on ARM's v8 64-bit architecture. In late June, the firm revealed a number of partners that would be shipping servers with its X-Gene chip inside, and one similarity amongst them all is that they also bundle in NVIDIA Tesla GPU accelerators. The DDR4 future looms increasingly large, as Crucial announced that it’s now sampling DDR4 server memory to channel partners who are working on platforms to support the latest generation of RAM. Today, AMD is launching a pair of power-optimized server parts based on what it calls the "Warsaw" refresh. Microservers may not be for everyone, but when computing requirements are low, such as with a cloud server, they could be perfect. Such proof of that comes from Verizon today, which has just announced its plans to adopt thousands of microservers to back its 'Verizon Cloud' network. Perhaps better still, the purchases are going to AMD, which has been in rather bad need of good news lately.
