After warning that it was doing so back in March, Google has changed its AdWords policies to ban sexually explicit advertisements, meaning that we’ll no longer see any porn ads in search results or anywhere on the AdWords network. “Google AdWords doesn't allow the promotion of some types of sexual content on the Google Network. You may not do the following: promote graphic depictions of sexual acts, promote content with underage or non-consensual sexual themes, including child sexual abuse content, promote services that may be interpreted as providing sexual acts in exchange for compensation,”... Far be it for us to try and dictate what you can and can't do with your Chromecast dongle in the privacy of your own home -- to each their own, we say -- but then again, we don't make the rules; Google does. We're calling your attention to this because, as far as Google is concerned, you better keep porn and other sexually explicit material far away from its tiny dongle. Never you mind that Android is based on Linux, a free and open source platform. When it comes to provocative material, Google channeled its inner Steve Jobs and brought down the paternalistic ban hammer on pornography, as outlined... Read more...
Everyone has heard of patent trolls or copyright trolls like Righthaven, but the rapid evolution of the new porn troll has scientists puzzled. This new species of lawyer has emerged in the past two years as an intriguing example of how natural selection can quickly influence the trajectory of a species. Like its brethren, the porn troll issues a flood of letters to alleged infringers. What's unique about many of these lawyers, however, is the scope and nature of the actions. Think of it as a class-action lawsuit in reverse. Porn trolls gather several hundred anonymous users who are identified only... Read more...
The collapse of Wall Street a few years back and the so-called Great Recession that followed were, it's generally agreed, pretty bad things. As investment banks began to fail and the Dow fell, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) found itself in the uncomfortable position of having to explain how this had happened on its watch. It seems logical to think the top brass at the federal watchdog would have spent their time furiously searching for an explanation as to what had happened, while simultaneously trying to explain how they missed it. As it turns out, that's not quite true. The SEC... Read more...
Some Comcast customers in Tucson, Arizona, who were watching the Super Bowl last night, received a very unexpected program interruption during the last few minutes of the game. Just moments after Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald scored a touchdown that momentarily gave the Cardinals a 23-20 lead with 2:37 left on the clock, the broadcast suddenly switched from the Super Bowl to a scene from a pornographic movie--including full-frontal, male nudity--for about 30 seconds, before the broadcast returned back to the Super Bowl. This unexpected interruption was limited to the HD broadcast... Read more...
Only a demotion? My, they're certainly lenient in Japan.  A Japanese civil servant was demoted for logging more than 780,000 hits on pornographic websites on his office computer over nine months, an official said Friday. The man, a Kinokawa city government employee in western Japan, visited porn sites from June 2007 to February 2008, city official Tomiko Waki said. The man's name was withheld.City officials said the number of hits discovered on his computer's internal log was so high in part because one click on certain types of pornographic sites registers multiple hits.Ah, I see.  So... Well, we are trying to imagine just how the Wii's innovative controller could be used in this case, but we would prefer to ... make no comment.Within a game display in a random Japanese game store an ad for Osouji Sentai Clean Keeper reads “worldly desires are completely open.” Whenever you see something like that used to advertise a game in Japan you’re usually in for a graphic adventure novel on a disc and low and behold that’s what it is.In Osouji Sentai Clean Keeper you basically save underage looking scantily clad women, who are actually in their 20s, from some kind of devil. When you do,... Read more...
What's worse than a little girl receiving a porn-laden iPod for Christmas?  How about one with a bizarre rant that looks like something out of a Batman movie? The message is more or less a rant about “capitalist garbage” and “reclaiming your mind from the media shackles” according to reports."Jay Ellis, the girls father, returned the ipod to the Germantown, Md. Wal-Mart store where he purchased it. The store manger told him that another customer returned an iPod with a similar issue."An iPod stuffed with porn, or a psychotic rant.  That's a tough choice.... Another grinch appears as a ten-year-old in Tennessee received a decidedly unwelcome present.Hill bought three of the players as Christmas presents for his children. He said one of the devices had apparently been returned to the store from a previous owner who loaded sex clips and songs with lyrics about using drugs."Within 10 minutes, my daughter was crying," Hill said Thursday. "I wish I could take the thoughts and images out of her head."Hill questioned why Wal-Mart Stores Inc. would sell used merchandise as new, which he said violates its own policies. The father is keeping the player until... Look, if the OLPC can be used to surf for porn, why would this surprise anyone? These are MacBooks, after all ... built-in webcam ... and as Apple likes to say, great for multimedia! The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into three Greene County Central High School students accused of creating and sending pornographic material with their school-issued computers. In one case, a 16-year-old student reportedly sent video of himself with his 15-year-old girlfriend to a teacher by mistake.Lesson one: if you're going to email something like this, zip it and encrypt with a password, then double-check... Just about everybody has heard some sort of interesting search-related fact that has to do with pornography on the Internet.  First it was that searches for Jesus Christ came up with less results than the word porn on Google.  Then it became a big deal to be 'bigger than porn' when it came to Google hits. But the number of search results doesn't accurately depict the number of searches on a subject, just the volume of related material.  So who's 'bigger than porn' this week?  According to Hitwise it's none other than Facebook, at least with one of its key demographics:"Perhaps... Mac OS X malware?  It can't be!  That OS always purports itself to be so safe.  And they're using a favorite type of bait: porn.Intego, a Mac security software company, issued an alert Wednesday warning Mac users of the OSX.RSPlug.A malware, which it describes as a Trojan horse. Those of you familiar with mythology recognize the reference, and OSX.RSPlug.A disguises itself as a video codec that would ensure whatever porn video you just stumbled upon will play on your Mac.But to get infected with the malware, you have to accept the invitation to download "new version of codec," open... Clean Port 80, a group created by SCO chairman Ralph Yarro, is trying to keep websites with pornographic content from using port 80, the main HTTP port, in order to contain the proliferation of porn on the internet. Clean Port 80's main argument is that the internet is comparable to a TV with only one channel on which pornography or other unsuitable content may randomly show up while children are watching; something the group argues no parent would want. While Clean Port 80's goals may sound noble to some, to others they amount to nothing more than censorship. The governor of Utah signed... Read more...
