Acer showed off everything from a fitness-related wearables, to a bicycle-mounted computer, new smartphones, ultra-portables, and gaming PCs. We posted up some press-shots and technical details of the new Acer Switch Alpha 12, and new Predator G1 small form factor system and Predator 17x gaming notebook, as Acer was making the announcements yesterday. However, we were also present at the event to get some hands-on time with Acer’s new products. The Acer Switch Alpha 12... Read more...
The ultra-limited 14-inch Chromebook category grew by a single model today with the introduction of Acer's CB3-431, one of just two 14-inch Chromebook models on the planet (HP owns the other) and the only one to boast up to an impressive 14 hours of battery life for all day and night productivity and fun. That battery life claim applies to the HD version, which sports a 1366x768 display resolution. Acer also offers a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) version, and while Acer doesn't suggest you can squeeze 14 hours of run time out of the thing, it's rated up to a still impressive 12 hours, plenty to get... Despite its rugged exterior designed to protect it from the unforgiving clumsiness of grade school kids, the ASUS Chromebook C202 is surprisingly easy to operate on and repair at home. That's the takeaway from iFixIt's latest teardown, which noted that "opening the C202 was easier than sticking a straw in a juice box." Presumably they're talking about an actual juice box and not a Capri Sun, the latter of which is the bane of any thirsty child looking for a quick hit.The Chromebook C202's friendly serviceability isn't by accident. ASUS intentionally designed the C202 to be both "classroom-rugged"... Read more...
Happy Pi Day, nerds and geeks! Don't worry, we mean that affectionately, otherwise we'd be throwing stones in glass houses. In case you weren't aware, today is March 14, or 3.14, the shortened version of Pi, which is the mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter regardless of the size of the circle. Pi is also an irrational number, meaning it goes on forever in decimal form and never repeats itself. It's truly a wondrous, mind-blowing thing, and in celebration of Pi Day, Dell is offering 31.4 percent off select notebooks in the Microsoft Store.Don't... Read more...
Wondering where the love for Linux is from big box OEMs? Look no further than Dell and its XPS 13 Developer Edition laptops. Also known as "Project Sputnik," Dell came up with the idea of offering developers a powerful and thin XPS notebook running Linux and launched its first models over three years ago. Now in its 5th generation, Project Sputnik is still going strong today with the latest models combining Ubuntu 14.04 with Intel's Skylake processors. To kick off its newest generation of Developer Edition laptops, Dell is offering three Core i7 configurations, including two that feature 16GB of... Read more...
Update: 10/23/15 11:20AM - A definite perk of writing about technology is getting to attend events and spending hands on time with bleeding-edge products. We've been fortunate to do that on several occasions, including today at Dell World 2015 where the company is making several major announcements as well as showing off some rather impressive looking forthcoming products. One of those products is the XPS 15, Dell's hot new Ultrabook with a gorgeous 15.6-inch 4K resolution Infinity Edge display. It sports the same near-borderless design as the XPS 13 that impressed us earlier this year, but in... Read more...
Mobile gaming GPUs have never been on par with their latest desktop brethren, though that's about to change with the introduction of a GeForce GTX 980 built for laptops. NVIDIA answered the call for true desktop class graphics in a laptop form factor, and MSI will be the first to market with a gaming notebook built around the high end GPU.That system is the GT72 Dominator Pro G, a limited edition laptop in celebration of MSI's 29th anniversary. What makes it so special is the combination of a true GeForce GTX 980 GPU (with 8GB of GDDR5 memory) paired up with an Intel Core i7-6820HK processor based... Read more...
Love it or hate it, Apple's MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines have remained a watermark for which the majority of notebook manufacturers aspire to, whether it's enthusiast gaming companies like Razer with their Blade, or mainstream vendors like Dell via their outstanding XPS 13. Enter Asus. They've utilized their ZenBook line to satisfy a wide range of demographics and price points, but their UX501 -- with its "Pro" designation, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960m GPU, and 4K touchscreen display -- is a Zenbook aspiring to meet and exceed Apple's flagship notebook, and look stunning while doing it. ... When you think about what constitutes a "mobile workstation," several things come to mind. Things like ISV certification, long battery life, professional graphics (NVIDIA Quadro or AMD FirePro), and sometimes a rugged design. But what about the processor? Intel's Xeon chips have been powering workstations for a long time, and for the first time, Intel will offer Xeon processor options for laptops. These CPUs will be part of the Xeon E3-1500M v5 family based on Intel's recently launched 14nm Skylake architecture. They'll deliver high precision computing horsepower in notebook form factors and sport... Read more...

All vendors take note -- the secret to success is price. It wasn't until Android tablets undercut the iPad on cost of ownership that they found an audience, and the reason Chromebooks are selling so well is because they're cheap, not because they're preferred over Windows laptops. Hewlett-Packard is one of the first OEMs to figure this out, as evidenced by its new like of affordable Stream laptops and tablets. Just don't expect HP to come right out and say it so bluntly -- rather than tout price, the OEM is pitching style and the allure of Windows. "Today’s consumers demand mobile products... Read more...
Dirty rotten laptop thieves may want to consider another way to make a quick buck, as there are forces in play that will hopefully render this business model obsolete. Intel has teamed up with Impinj, Technology Solutions UK Ltd. (TSL), and Burnside Digital to create an RFID solution called Wireless Credential Exchange (WCE) to track lost and stolen laptops. Intel's System-on-Chip (SoC) is a crucial component of the RFID system. The key is that it can read and write data to the Monza RFID chip that will be embedded into Intel SoC-powered devices. The chip can also be read and written to using an... Read more...
