As any online gamer knows, sometimes disconnects happen. It could be that your router hiccuped or someone accidentally unplugged the power strip where your cable modem is plugged into. Maybe your system simply crashed. Unfortunately for Overwatch players, unintentional disconnects can lead to a loss in placement ratings and a dinged skill rating, even if they reconnect and their team wins. That's something Blizzard is working to address. The way things work now in a competitive match, if someone quits within the first 30 seconds of game play, the match is invalid and the person who left receives... Read more...
Cheating is rampant in online gaming and a large reason why is the easy accessibility of popular software tools for gaining an unfair advantage. One of them is Watchover Tyrant, a cheat tool for Overwatch that offers several in-game hacks starting at 12.95 euros (around $14.50 in U.S. currency). Not only is Overwatch developer Blizzard aware of the tool, it's suing Watchover Tyrant's maker, Bossland, for copyright infringement. Overwatch is big success for Blizzard. The new franchise stormed out of the gate and raced to 10 million users in less than month. While the majority of gamers play by the... Read more...
Overwatch, the team-based multiplayer shooter from Blizzard Entertainment has proven to be an unstoppable force in the industry having now reached the hands of more than 7 million gamers within a week of launch. Many predicted as much once the early beta saw nearly 10 million users. Admittedly, we too have been immovably glued to the game since installing the PC version early last week. It features a wide variety of characters, and play styles, with frenetic-pace gameplay that is easy and intuitive for casual players. Yet Overwatch dishes out plenty of depth and strategy for crafty players who... Read more...
There are few things that can ruin an online game quite as fast as a cheater. If a bug is exploited, a cheater can turn an otherwise great game into a downright frustrating one, and it seems this is a point Blizzard understands well. While cheaters are almost expected in any online game, Blizzard is having none of it with Overwatch. In an official forum post, Blizzard Community Manager Lylirra says, "Play nice; play fair" is one of the company's core values, and it's something that's built into each and every Blizzard title. What does that mean in Overwatch? There's no lenience with cheaters -... Read more...
If you haven’t been bombarded at some point with numerous Facebook notifications to join your friends for a round of Candy Crush, consider yourself lucky. You can’t shake a stick without hitting somehow hitting something related to Candy Crush (an iOS users know all too well about tricky banners that automatically transports you to App Store in an effort to get you to download the freemium game). Given the hysteria surrounding the Candy Crush franchise, developer King Digital must be doing something right. Activision Blizzard was definitely taking notice, and this week announced that it has reached... Read more...
After a string of disappointing game launches (some of which were possibly made worse by inadequate testing), it’s good to see Activision and developer Treyarch running a large-scale beta ahead of its Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 release. Scott Lowe of Activision announced this week that that the companies will run a worldwide multiplayer beta starting next month, giving it plenty of time to work out any kinks before the official November 6 release date. “During the beta, fans will have an opportunity to try the new momentum-based, chained movement system, find the perfect Specialist to fit their... Like many MMORPGs, World of Warcraft can be a grind. To sidestep the time commitment required to continually level up a character, gather resources, improve skills, or whatever else is desired, some gamers turn to bots, software that automates the process. The only problem is, Activision Blizzard isn't so keen on this behavior and has dropped the ban hammer hard on gamers who've been using them. Activision Blizzard didn't specify exactly how many people it booted, saying only that it was a "large number of World of Warcraft accounts." However, a screenshot of a conversation between a player, Game... Read more...
Blizzard appears to have ended access to its games in Crimea, effectively blocking gamers there from playing Diablo III, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and other blizzard games. It’s just one of several U.S. companies that have exited the region recently. Others include Apple and Blizzard’s competitor, Valve. “You are receiving this email because, in accordance with current trade regulations relating to the region of Crimea, we are legally required to suspend access to your Battle.net account,” states a letter that appears to be from Blizzard, translated by Geektimes.ru. “Any recurring subscription... Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is another success story for Activision. The latest installment has helped advance the franchise to grossing $10 billion in sales to date and, according to Activision, Advanced Warfare is the number one best-selling console game for this year in the U.S. While the latest Call of Duty game continues the trend of being one the year’s biggest sellers, Advanced Warfare also continues the trend of declining sales numbers over the past couple of years for the franchise. According to Edward Williams of BMO Capital Markets, the sales numbers for Advanced Warfare... Read more...
Everything old comes eventually comes back in style, and luckily for me, that includes old school adventure games. One that you can already play is Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded, a remake of the original with new puzzles and updated graphics. And if you're a fan of old ware from Sierra, you'll be happy to know that the King's Quest reboot is coming right along, as evidenced by a trailer that was unveiled at The Game Awards in Las Vegas. Unlike the Leisure Suit Larry remake, which brought back creator Al Lowe to work on the project, creators Roberta and Ken Williams aren’t overseeing the new King’s... Read more...
The Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer’s Edition was released on November 6 for gamers who might be curious as to the longest gaming session, which franchise has earned the most in gross sales, or just basic facts and figures related to gaming. One particular topic that tends to generate discussion is what game franchise is the best. For Guinness, Activision’s first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty, beat out other franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto and Mario Bros, to be named the best franchise ever. “More than 5,000 fans of the book from 140 countries across the world... It's not like Blizzard to show up at its annual Blizzcon convention without a big announcement in hand, and this year is no exception. The big announcement this time around is Overwatch, a new team-based mulitplayer shooter that has the web at large making inevitable comparisons to Team Fortress 2. And with good reason, because one look at any of the screenshots or one of the gameplay trailers is all it takes to come to that conclusion. We're not saying that's a bad thing, and in fact we're rather excited about Overwatch, in part because this is Blizzard's first new franchise in 17 years. Yes,... Read more...
Kevin Spacey's acting chops are on full display in Activision's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Day Zero Edition, which is now available worldwide. It's an interesting launch on a number of levels, not the least of which is that this is the first CoD title led by developer Sledgehammer Games, the first time for a three-year development cycle, and it uses a entirely new game engine. "Three years ago we made some big decisions to invest in a three-year development cycle and to enlist Sledgehammer Games to be the first new lead studio for Call of Duty in a decade," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision...
