The verdict is still out on whether or not the population at large will embrace smartwatches when they can whip out their smartphones to check the time instead, though one thing that's been propping up sales in the wearables category is the recent hyper focus on health on fitness. It's an angle Apple's been leveraging with its Apple Watch devices, and now it's partnered with Aetna to push its products and services onto the healthcare carrier's employees and members. As part of Aetna's new Apple-focused initiative, it plans to hand out Apple Watches to all of its nearly 50,000 employees. There's... Read more...
Change is hard, we get it, we really do. It's even more difficult when said change is seemingly unnecessary or for the worse. Such is the feeling that some people have with Apple's decision to remove the standard 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus handsets. Unfortunately, some jackholes on the Internet are using the change as an opportunity to trick people into drilling into and ruining their pricey new smartphones with the promise of bringing back the audio port. Let us be very clear here—there is NO bringing back the 3.5mm audio jack, and videos purporting otherwise by drilling... Read more...
The latest version of iOS brings a lot of interesting (and perhaps fun) things to the table, but as it turns out, It had one sloppy regression that was quickly pointed out. Apple shipped iOS 10 with a severe security vulnerability that affects iTunes backups. As we reported on Friday, Russian security research firm Elcomsoft revealed that gaining access to an iOS 10 backup password via iTunes, is "2,500 times faster" than before. While that speed boost is likely only going to be useful to those who have physical access to a device, it's an alarming statistic nonetheless. And if there's... Read more...
Apple bills iOS 10 as being “More personal. More powerful. More playful.” It’s hard to argue with that train of thought, given the features that Apple has infused into the mobile operating system including a totally revamped iMessage app, rich notifications, third-party app integration with Siri, more useful 3D Touch actions, and other various tweaks and additions. However, at least one area in iOS 10 has seen a bit of a regression compared to previous versions, and it could leave your iPhone and iPad data less secure than before. We know that some of the world’s best hackers come from Russia,... Read more...
The smart home category is one of the fastest growing segments and everyone wants a piece of it. That includes Apple, which is looking for another breakout product like the iPhone. Apparently Apple believes that product could be a smart home device similar to Amazon's Echo gadget, but powered by Siri instead of Alexa and sporting a few additional bells and whistles.People who claim to be familiar with Apple's plans say that Apple began work on the smart home device two years ago, and that the project just recently exited the research and development phase. Apple has yet to finalize plans for whatever... Read more...
It didn't take long for someone to figure out how to jailbreak Apple's newfangled iPhone 7 handset. A 19-year-old hacker known online as "qwertyoruiop" and offline as Luca Todesco needed just 24 hours to thwart the security measures in place of Apple's "best, most advanced iPhone ever" and iOS 10, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. By jailbreaking the iPhone 7, Todesco put himself in full control of the device. The biggest benefit to jailbreaking is being able to install apps outside of the App Store that haven't been approved by Apple. There's a world of functionality and features... Read more...
Rumors about an Apple-developed electric car had been picking up speed for the past year, before hitting a speed bump earlier this month when it was reported that the company had shelved plans for the car. Word on the street at the time was that Apple was instead focusing its energies on developing self-driving software that could “plug in” to other manufacturers’ vehicles. Now a rather outlandish report is coming from the Financial Times, which suggests that Apple in talks to purchase (or at least make a substantial investment in) the McLaren Technology Group. In case you need a refresher, McLaren... Read more...
Apple finally bumped up the minimum storage allotment on its iPhone 7, doubling it to 32GB compared to 16GB on several previous iPhone generations, along with also offering 128GB and 256GB tiers for the middle and high-end SKUs, respectively. The Cupertino outfit did it without jacking up the price of the iPhone, though don't fret on Tim Cook's account, he and the rest of the Apple gang still stand to make a pretty penny on every iPhone 7 handset sold. It's estimated by IHS Markit that the actual bill of materials (BOM) is only $220. Well, just a little less if we're picking nits—$219.80. Toss... Read more...
Politicians are not the only ones mudslinging this season. Huawei’s Matebook and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 have teamed up to continue to try and humiliate the iPad Pro and its various shortcomings. In Huawei’s latest commercial, the iPad Pro is being pushed out of the cool kid’s table. The advertisement battle all started when Apple released its initial iPad Pro commercial. The iPad Pro ad is titled “What’s a computer?” and starts with “Just when you think you know what a computer is, you see a keyboard that can just get out of the way...and a screen you can touch and even write on.” The commercial... You can always count on comedians to be ready to pounce whenever Apple comes out with a new iPhone design, and with the recently announced iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the Cupertino outfit made it all too easy. As you're probably well aware by now, Apple decided to nix the standard 3.5mm audio jack from its new iPhones in favor of going wireless with a set of Bluetooth AirPods (sold separately, of course), or you can use its proprietary Lightning connector. Well, Conan O'Brien used the decision as an opportunity to throw shade at Apple in a spoof advertisement that's reminiscent of the silhouette... Read more...
Earlier this year, the FBI and Apple were embroiled in a bitter battle of words with regards to unlocking an iPhone 5c that was used by Syed Farook, one of two San Bernardino shooters. After much bluster on the part of FBI, and complete stonewalling from Apple, the FBI eventually went to a third-party vendor to bypass the iPhone 5c’s security protocols and obtain the data it was searching for. With the Freedom of Information Act on their side, three news organizations — the Associated Press, USA Today, and Vice Media — reached out to the FBI to obtain details on how the hack was carried out on... Apple didn't exactly reinvent the smartphone with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but what it did do was implement several noteworthy upgrades, including a more capacious battery and a new water resistant design. And of course there's lots of adhesive, a staple of Apple gadgets, which along with the aforementioned bits are on full display in a teardown that has a twist. With the iPhone 7 fresh off the assembly line, the folks at iFixIt wasted not a single solitary moment getting their mitts on the larger Plus model and taking it apart. As always, the process began with the removable of Pentalobe... Read more...
Motorola is imploring smartphone shoppers to "Skip the Sevens," the tagline of a new ad campaign designed "to get you to think about what you really want from a smartphone." The so-called "Sevens," of course, is a thinly veiled reference to Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and Samsung's Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Galaxy Note 7. We have to hand it to Motorola here, it could have taken the easy path by belittling Apple's attempt to convince users it was courageous for removing the 3.5mm audio jack from its iPhone 7 line, or pointing out that Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 handsets are sometimes too... The rumor mill never stops when it comes to Apple products — especially with regards to the iPhone. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were just revealed last week, and customers won’t get their hands on the smartphones until Friday morning at the earliest. But given the evolutionary nature of the A10 Fusion-powered phones, pundits are already looking forward to what will be released next year in celebration of the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. It’s being hypothesized that the next generation iPhone will leave behind its aluminum unibody construction, which has served it well since the release of the... Read more...
