Microsoft is celebrating Windows 10’s first birthday today, and it also marks the last day that customers can receive a free upgrade to the operating system (starting tomorrow, the upgrade will cost $119 per license). And beginning next Tuesday, those who have already joined the Windows 10 family will be able to download the Anniversary Update. However, at least one group of Windows 10 users isn’t going to be happy about the update. The Group Policy editor for Windows 10 Pro has received an update that actually removes functionality that has been included in the operating system for the past year.... Read more...
Today is supposed to be a big day for Microsoft. It marks the one-year anniversary of the release of Windows 10 and the company is eagerly hoping that its straggling customers will make the last-minute free upgrade to the operating system before the price shoots up to $119 tomorrow. However, Microsoft at the same time is witnessing a funeral of sorts for its smartphone division. The company announced back in May that it would eliminate 1,850 positions in its smartphone hardware business, and this week revealed that it will lay off another 2,850 employees globally over the next 12 months (again,... Time is quickly running out if you're planning to take Microsoft up on its offer to upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10 for free. Yes, it's been a full year already since Windows 10 released to the public. But don't fret if procrastination's gotten the better of you, there's still several hours left to upgrade at no cost. Microsoft says you have until midnight tonight UTC-10 before the deal is off the table. If you live in the U.S., that means the expiration on Microsoft's offer is technically July 30, albeit you'll have to upgrade by 5:59 am ET (2:59 am PT). For those of you... Read more...

So to celebrate its first birthday on Windows 10 (which itself is celebrating a birthday tomorrow), Mojang has a couple of surprises in store for gamers. Don’t get us wrong, Windows 10 is a great operating system and clearly a step above its Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 predecessors. Sure, there have been some questions about privacy and Microsoft has made some questionable decisions regarding features, but for the most part, Windows 10 is a solid release. However, Microsoft’s biggest blunder with Windows 10 has been its overaggressive campaigning to entice, force, or even trick users into taking part in the free upgrade. The practice has drawn anger from around the world, and two new lawsuits are aimed at the Redmond, Washington-based company as a... Read more...
Cortana, the voice-controlled personal digital assistant that helps you find things on your PC and the web, is getting a promotion from an on-call employee to full-time status. That's to stay you won't be able to turn Cortana off once Microsoft rolls out its Anniversary Update for Windows 10, which is scheduled to arrive on August 2, 2016. "With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the search box is now Cortana," Microsoft said in a statement. "Customers can expect the same great search experience powered by Bing and Microsoft Edge with the added benefit of Cortana’s personality." This isn't necessarily... Read more...
Microsoft has a problem on its hands when it comes to Surface Pro 3 tablets, which have been in circulation for roughly two years. Customers have reported that battery life on some of these tablets has been inexplicably deteriorating in recent months, with no apparent fix in sight. The Microsoft Community forums have been flooded with complaints from users that have been afflicted by the battery drain problem. One common theme that does appear to be emerging throughout this whole ordeal is that the majority of the Surface Pro 3 tablets that are having issues feature SIMPLO batteries. To make... Windows 10 continues to gain ground on Windows 7 in the race for market share dominance. Though the gap between the two is still rather large, Windows 10 has managed to find its way onto more than 19 percent of the world's PCs, according to the latest data from Net Market Share. That's up from 11.85 percent at the beginning of the year. It's been a steady climb for Windows 10, which released to the public a year ago this month. The OS got off to a fast start, hitching a ride on 5.21 percent of PCs in its first month of availability and nearly doubling its position by the end of the year with a... Read more...
If you want to get your hands on Microsoft’s brand new Xbox One S console, the fastest way to do it is to grab a 2TB bundle, which will be available on August 2nd. However, the 2TB Xbox One also happens to be the most expensive version, coming in at $399. If $399 is out of your budget range for a new console, Microsoft just announced the availability date for the two cheaper Xbox One S consoles: the $349 1TB and $299 500GB models. Both will be available on August 23rd, although pre-orders for both consoles open today. The Xbox One S Madden NFL 17 Bundle comes with (of course) a copy of Madden NFL... Read more...
Word is ubiquitous these days (as are the rest of its Office app counterparts), which is possible thanks to decades of development and advancement by Microsoft. But despite the fact that Word may have a few grey whiskers jutting from its chinny chin chin, this old dog is definitely up for learning some new tricks. And today, Microsoft has revealed that its machine learning prowess has resulted in a new feature that will make it easier for researchers to search for information without impeding their workflow. If you’re writing a research paper, Microsoft’s new Researcher tool for Office 365 brings... Read more...
Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney isn't a fan of what Microsoft is doing with Windows 10, and specifically its effort to promote the Windows Store by pushing the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) model. We already know this, but lest anyone think Sweeney has cooled off since the last time he raked Microsoft over the coals, he had more to say on the matter, accusing the Redmond outfit of being sneaky in its attempt to overthrow Steam. "There are two programming interfaces for Windows and every app has to choose one of them. Every Steam app - every PC game for the past few decades - has used Win32. It's... Read more...
Windows 10 is a fine operating system that in many ways is far superior to its Windows 8.x and Windows 7 predecessors. Windows 10, however, has also gotten a pretty bad reputation due to steps that Microsoft has taken to push the operating system onto consumers in an effort to reach one billion installs by the end of 2018 (a goal that now is completely out of reach). But we shouldn’t let Microsoft’s overaggressive upgrade campaign make us lose sight of the benefits that Windows 10 offers. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Microsoft’s free upgrade offer for Windows 10 expires this... Read more...
When it comes to Microsoft’s gaming consoles, the upcoming Xbox One S is the “new hotness”, so to speak. The Xbox One S is 40 percent slimmer than its predecessor and includes a new wireless controller (which now supports Bluetooth), an additional USB port, 4K support, and an IR blaster. It will also be available in three capacities: 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB). To make room on brick and mortar (and online) store shelves, Microsoft is once again cutting the price of the current Xbox One to drive sales. The entry-level 500GB console was reduced from $349 to $299 ahead of E3, and dropped again to $279 in... Read more...
