Apple announced its uber-thin MacBook yesterday to much fanfare. The device measures just 13.1mm at its thickest point and tips that scales at drool-worthy two pounds. Apple even managed to throw in a Retina display, “all-day battery life,” and Intel’s power efficient Core M processor that doesn’t require a fan. But in Apple’s never-ending quest to make all of its devices as thin as possible, it gave up all traditional ports including Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0, and HDMI — it even had to forgo the SD slot. In its place is a solitary USB-C type connector. And wouldn’t you know it, just a day after the... Read more...
Since when is an external hard drive solution a decorative desk piece? Since now, apparently -- Seagate's premium owned LaCie division today unveiled the LaCie Mirror portable hard drive that comes completely encased in scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. It also comes with an ebony wooden base, which might seem odd for an external drive, though this is one of those cases where it would be a shame to keep it out of sight. The LaCie Mirror is a signature piece designed in collaboration with French designer Pauline Deltour. It's also functional -- inside the Mirror sits a 1TB hard drive for... Read more...
LaCie is in the process of informing its customers that any purchases made on the company's website within the last year could be compromised. The even scarier part about this is that the suspected data breach could have went on longer -- maybe much longer -- if the FBI didn't inform LaCie last month that it had reason to believe a person used malware to gain access to information from customer transactions made from March 27, 2013 to March 10, 2014. Everything about this situation is disturbing. There's the fact that this went on for so long unbeknownst to LaCie, and also that after being alerted... Read more...
Seagate’s LaCie brand has boldly laid claim to the distinction of having the world’s fastest portable external storage solution with its Thunderbolt 2-equipped Little Big Disk. LaCie says that the unit can rock speeds of up to 1,375MBps. (Note that’s megabytes, not megabits.) The Little Big Disk is outfitted with two 500GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs in RAID 0, and LaCie says that the solution is ideal for 4K video editing, with the ability to transfer 300GB of 4K footage in under three minutes. A big selling point for the Little Big Disk is the ability to daisy chain it with other units,... Read more...
Storage products maker LaCie is claiming an industry-first 5TB 7200 RPM hard drive, and it’s deploying the spacious HDD in several Thunderbolt-equipped devices. “Increasingly larger file formats for film and photography have driven the demand for more storage capacity,” reads a LaCie press release. “The availability of 5TB hard drives enables LaCie to deliver significantly more storage capacity in its same compact desktop designs.” The LaCie 5big Thunderbolt Series, 2big Thunderbolt Series, and the d2 Thunderbolt Series, as well as the LaCie 2big Quadra and d2 Quadra... Seagate and LaCie came to CES with armloads of new storage devices, and the first thing that jumps out at you about the whole schmeer is the impressive capacity of the lot of them. And capacity, it seems, was indeed a focus. “People around the world are in urgent need of space to store their most cherished memories, information and data, so we at Seagate are on a mission to provide people with the space they need for all of their lifelong experiences,” said Scott Horn, VP marketing. “To keep pace with changing needs and demands, we have to remove limits around design, function,... You have to appreciate a good external hard drive that faithfully ferries important data from one place to another, while safely stashed on a drive that’s wrapped inside a slick-looking, durable chassis. These days, the storage capacity on a typical and relatively inexpensive external hard drive is large; 1TB is a standard size, and it isn’t at all uncommon to see 2TB drives, too. We looked at a few external hard drives from Toshiba, WD, and LaCie, all with similar specs to see how they stacked up against one another. All three of the units in our test bank employ a speedy USB 3.0 interface... Read more...

Intel’s Thunderbolt interface technology is not yet ubiquitous, although it’s common among Macs and slowly catching on in the PC industry, but the company is already plowing forward with a new controller called “Falcon Ridge” that promises to double Thunderbolt’s already impressive 10Gbps. The technology is being called “Thunderbolt 2” and offers a whopping 20Gbps of bandwidth. The way it works is that two previously-separate 10Gbps channels are combined into a single, bi-directional channel, and that new channel can handle both data and display. On its... Read more...
