Update:  Ubisoft has amended the original forum post to include and acknowledge problems on Nvidia hardware as well. We're glad the company has explicitly adjusted the post and will update readers if any major performance patches push out. Life is hard when you're a AAA publisher. Ever since AMD announced it would build an ARM processor, there've been questions about how the company would balance its x86 and ARM obligations and product lines. Today, the company gave a major update to how it sees the future of these products. This year, AMD will debut its first Cortex-A57 based server (codenamed Seattle). In 2015, AMD will launch a 20nm SoC family around the new Puma+ core and a second-gen Cortex-A57 chip -- and those two CPUs will be drop-in compatible with each other (codenamed Project Skybridge). There's a rumor going around on social media that you can enable Xbox 360 backwards compatibility  on an Xbox One by hopping through a series of steps meant to enable Developer Mode, changing a setting, and restarting the box. Don't believe it. There is no method of allowing the Xbox One to play Xbox 360 games, via any software program. Microsoft's Major Nelson has denounced the idea directly. Sony shared more details on the PS4 today, including CPU specs, controller design decisions, and advanced information on the platform's API. We've known that the PS4 used an AMD Jaguar-derived core for months, but the new information today points to a standard implementation of AMD's reference design. The PS4 has two four-core Jaguar blocks. Each block shares a 2MB L2 cache and each core has a 32K L1 data cache. One of the interesting facts to come out of Sony's PS4 announcement is that the new console is, for all intents and purposes, a PC. This isn't the first time a major manufacturer has launched a console based on commodity PC hardware -- Microsoft's original Xbox was a Pentium 3 with an onboard GeForce 2 GPU -- but it's a definite first for Sony. Nvidia has finished work on a new supercomputer at Oak Ridge that showcases the company's K20 Tesla GPUs. The new cluster, dubbed Titan, is expected to break the 20 petaflop barrier. The system is a major upgrade to the Jaguar supercomputer that proceeded it (Jaguar was prominently upgraded last year to AMD's new Bulldozer CPUs after utilizing Magny-Cours products. The net effect of the upgrade has boosted Titan's raw computing power tenfold, while occupying the same floor space as the previous Jaguar system. How do you turn a Jaguar into a Titan? It's simple really -- just change its diet to include plenty of Tesla chips. That's what the Oak Ridge National Laboratory plans to do as it upgrades its Jaguar supercomputer with no less than 960 Tesla M2090 GPUs based on Nvidia's Fermi architecture, followed by a second upgrade that will include 18,000 Tesla GPUs based on Nvidia's Kepler architecture.
