With less than two work days remaining until the start of the long Memorial Day weekend, many minds are turning to thoughts having nothing at all to do with work... loved ones lost to service or currently serving, barbecue, baseball, hanging at the beach or pool, that first donning of white pants and shoes after a long winter in storage... and traffic.  One of the most road-traveled weekends of this or any year in the USA, many of those who will be behind the wheel over Memorial Day weekend will go so far as to work out time lost to traffic in their planning. All of which serves to make... Read more...

It's Christmas. Actually, it's the day before the fake Mayan apocalypse, Winter Solstice Eve, two days before Festivus, and five days before Christmas. Regardless of your chosen holiday, it's the magical time of year when the kinfolk you've spent 51 weeks successfully avoiding manage to squirm their way into your home like particularly determined tapeworms. Having attached themselves to the intestines of your dogged Christmas cheer, they'll regale you with stories of their vacations, promotions, life accomplishments. If they have children, you'll be treated to lengthy treatises on how Spawn Jr... Read more...

As you wait in the checkout line just before Christmas, your observation is correct. That other line is moving faster than yours. That's what Bill Hammack (the Engineer Guy), from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois - Urbana "proves" in this YouTube video. The video was released just in time for the final days of the holiday shopping season, as a lesson in queueing theory for the holiday season. Using the work of Agner Erlang, a Danish engineer who helped the Copenhagen Telephone Company determine the best level of service with the minimum... Read more...
Between the recent eBook Reader price war that broke out, the flurry of tablets just around the corner, and the recession finally starting to let up, you would think this holiday shopping season is gearing up to be busier than ever. You'd also be wrong, according to new data by market research firm The NPD Group. The NPD Group just finished its ninth annual survey of consumers' holiday spending interests, and if you're a retailer banking on strong sales for the holidays, go ahead and stop reading now. Almost a third (30 percent) of respondents said they plan to spend less this year than last. Just... Read more...
As the decade winds down, it's fun to look back and think just how different our world is now compared to this time in 1999. One of the easiest ways to see just how drastic the chances have been is to look at Amazon, which just put out some rather staggering fun facts. Without a doubt, the company's own hardware device (the Kindle) was its most popular gift, and just ten years ago e-reading devices were but a pipe dream in some back corner lab that probably wasn't even being taken seriously. The Kindle became the company's most gifted item ever (yes, ever!) this Christmas, and what's crazy is that... Read more...
If you're looking for bandwagons that are heating up as the new decade gets set to begin, look no further than these two: 3D and Augmented Reality. The former has gained all sorts of industry support, from film producers to consumer electronics mainstays, while the latter is still building a loyal following underground. But at this rate, it won't be long before AR is a common word in the every day techie's vocabulary, and if we really want to take a wild stab at things, we'd say that MTV will be using this stuff on air (in a goofy manner, no less) within just a few years. Predictions aside, Rosetta... Read more...

Expect "not much" to happen after noontime in the cubicle farms. In office parks and skyscrapers all over the map, this afternoon is an opportunity for companies to disappoint and anger their employees with crummy gifts and alcohol-free office parties. Slate magazine asked for entries for their Corporate Scrooge contest, and boy, they got some doozies. Perhaps the most Dickensian example comes from Scrooge's homeland. One writer nominated his former employer, David Bury Ltd in the Dickensian-sounding town of Grimsby. "During my time with the company as a consumer electronic service engineer,... Read more...
With the holidays looming around the corner, and a bit of money burning a hole in your pocket, we here at HotHardware.com thought we'd do what we could to ensure that you spent your hard-earned cash in the most appropriate manner. Before we begin, it makes sense to outline our approach and illustrate what we're trying to accomplish. It is critical to have reasonable expectations here, as no $1,000 system is going to compete with a $4,000 SLI monster. However, as you will see a budget system does not necessarily mean lackluster performance. In fact, every system we reference in this article would... Read more...
