Although the Core i7 and X58 combo is a proven performance leader, there are still plenty of Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad CPUs out there in the wild. The Core 2 is still a very capable processor with many models costing less than half the price the cheapest Core i7 processor, the Core i7 920. Thus, systems based around the P45 chipset are still a viable option for getting good, if not great, performance at a vastly more affordable price. Microsoft and Yahoo executives quietly met on Monday to talk over Microsoft's unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo. It wasn't the sort of meeting where hands are shaken and papers are signed; reportedly Yahoo executives just listened to Microsoft explain what would happen if Microsoft's bid was accepted. Yahoo has been thrashing around trying to find some way to avoid being purchased, but time might be running out for them. It appears that 50-year old industrial-supply company Systemax, parent of TigerDirect is drawing a lot of negative heat these days over their rebates.  Here's an example of a deal and the problem: A 17” ViewSonic Monitor going for $139.99 sounds great.“But you'd have to read the small print to learn that TigerDirect's quoted price assumes you collect the $50 manufacturer's rebate. There is a rumor that the Eee PC is going to get a successor sometime in the new year.  Keep in mind that this is just a rumor, but the upgrade could be fairly extensive.  Early reports suggest that new Eee(e?) MRAM stands for magnetoresistive random access memory. NEC recently announced that they've  developed an SRAM compatible MRAM  that can run at 250 MHz, which they claim is the fastest MRAM in the world.  MRAM is swell because it's non-volatile: it remembers what you just told it even if you turn the power off.  If it's as fast as SRAM there's no competition.The unique MRAM was designed and fabricated by NEC and has a memory capacity of 1 megabit. Hewlett-Packard is still the world's largest seller of PCs. It surpassed Dell for the top spot a year ago, and is now widening its lead over Dell and everybody else. During the third quarter of 2007, H-P shipped 12.8 million PCs worldwide; that's 18.8% of the total market, and represents a whopping 33% jump from the same period last year. Dell is now a distant second with 9.8 million units shipped, followed by Acer, Lenovo, and Toshiba. The Foleo was overwhelmingly panned as a device in search of a market.  Not only that, as late as last week analysts were saying it would have to be delayed because of a number of bugs.  Rather than do that, today the first generation of Foleo - Palm insists there will be another generation - has been cancelled. Palm CEO Ed Colligan broke the news on Palm's official blog Tuesday after the close of the stock market. Scientists at the University of Southampton have developed  a tiny generator that is powered by vibrations. The generator was designed for use in applications where replacing batteries would be very difficult. At the heart of the tiny device, which is less than a cubic centimeter in size, are several magnets on a cantilever. When vibrations cause the magnets to wobble a small amount of power, on the scale of microwatts, is generated. While many of us still do not have access to High-definition TV signals, NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) has already started development of the "Super Hi-Vision" TV system, which they hope will replace HDTV in the future.  Apparently, SHV is capable of 7680x4320 resolution. What does that number mean exactly? Picture this: 16 HDTV screens arranged in a 4x4 array.
