Mobile security has become an issue of increasing importance, as mobile use has skyrocketed in recent years while cybercriminals have simultaneously spent more time finding ways to attack. There are several solutions out there, but a major one is Samsung’s Knox. According to researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, there may be a vulnerability in Knox as it runs on devices such as the wildly popular Samsung Galaxy S4. The team reportedly discovered a hack that would let ne’er-do-wells access Knox’s secure container where apps are run and data is stored securely.... Read more...
We’re already hungry for more information about the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is presumably going to be dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S5, and Rightware has offered up a benchmark result that could be from the new phone. The handset that posted the score is listed as the Samsung SM-G900F, which Rightware says could be the Galaxy S5. The device scored a 3303.88 in BrowserMark, good for third place out of all handsets tested. The device is running a slightly older browser, Chrome 28, and Rightware noted that if it had the up-to-date Chrome 31, it may have leapfrogged the second-place... Read more...
Although owners of the new-ish Samsung Galaxy S4 may still be swooning over the popular smartphone, the successor to Samsung’s flagship phone is already in the works. A new report has emerged that pegs the Samsung Galaxy S5’s release for March of 2014, with mass production beginning in January. It will come in two variants, one with an aluminum and a bendable OLED display, and another sporting the same sort of plastic body we’re used to seeing from Samsung. Other reports indicate that the aluminum S5 will rock a 64-bit Exynos processor while the plastic version will have a Qualcomm... Read more...
That didn’t take long. Less than a month after the Galaxy Gear smartwatch launched on carriers with the the Galaxy Note 3 as its only partner, Samsung announced that an upcoming Premium Suite software update will allow the Galaxy Gear to play nicely with several other handsets, most notably the Galaxy S4. The list also includes the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III, which will see the rollout of the new software starting today, and the Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 mini, and Galaxy Mega phablet will get it in the coming months. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 In addition to substantially expanding Galaxy... Read more...
Samsung announced the “mini” version of its hugely popular Galaxy S4 smartphone, the Galaxy S4 mini, back in May, and you can finally grab your own starting in November from the usual suspects--AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. In short order, the S4 mini will also be compatible with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. There’s really nothing miniature about this handset, though; although it’s smaller than the S4, the display is still 4.3 inches (qHD Super AMOLED, 960 X 540). In addition to running Android 4.3.3 Jelly Bean, the S4 mini sports a dual-core 1.7GHz processor,... Read more...
While the HTC One was built to compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5, and now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and a smaller, cheaper iPhone are in the works, HTC is set to release a mini version of its own. According to Bloomberg’s two sources “familiar with the matter”, the HTC One Mini (or whatever it will be called) will have a 4.3-inch display, which is a shade smaller that the HTC One’s 4.7-inch screen, and it will have a lower resolution, too. HTC One Further, the mini version will likely have a lower-spec’d Qualcomm SoC than the HTC One’s... Read more...
Oh, Samsung, you of myriad form factors and zany ideas. We have a feeling that the company will get its own large display in a computer museum someday dedicated to all the mobile devices it’s been cranking out lately, from giant phablets to stylus-equipped tablets to an Android camera. The latest is a combination smartphone and camera called the SamsungGalaxy S4 Zoom. There are a few photos of the device leaking out onto the web, and they show what pretty much looks like a phone with a camera glued to the back. If you’re hoping for a great smartphone with just a better than average... Read more...
The Apple rumor mill is at full bore today, and the latest rumor surrounds Apple’s upcoming iPhones. According to Digitimes, industry sources in the supply chain (from Taiwan) indicate that a pair of new Apple phones are in the offing for 2013. Apple has reportedly told its supply chain partners to prepare for about 20 million units a month. One of the handsets will be a version of the iPhone 5 (likely the iPhone 5S), and the other will be a lower-cost model that more closely resembles the iPhone 4S in terms of hardware, although its display and processor will be less impressive. The handsets... Read more...
Verizon has let the press know about a “special event” that’s happening on May 22nd at CTIA, and we’re left to speculate about what that announcement might be. In typical teaser fashion, Verizon sent out a note without any real details; sometimes, companies will throw us little hints with these things, but that’s not the case with this one. It just says, “Save the date” and “Join Verizon Wireless for a special announcement at CTIA.” And so we wonder. The company could announce the availability of the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One, both of which... Read more...
Most people assume that a smaller version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be coming along shortly, but until now all we’ve really had to go on is some leaked photos and specs and the rumor mill. However, Techtastic spotted a tell-tale snippet of user agent code on Samsung’s website that further points to the Galaxy S4 Mini becoming a Real Thing. All it is, really, is this: “GT-I9190". That’s just a model number, but it certainly appears to be the successor of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, which is “GT-I8190”. The code also appears to confirm that the device’s... Read more...
We can finally put an end date on the long wait for the Samsung Galaxy S4. According to a trusted source, the much-hyped handset will first land at AT&T on April 26th, and we’re told that it will boast up to 2.5 times the performance of its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, at least in certain benchmarks.  AnTuTu was noted as the metric this performance was observed in. The Galaxy S4 will also sport 4GB of RAM and rock a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Non-U.S. devices will have just 2GB of RAM, and we’ve heard previously that they will have either the aforementioned... Read more...
T-Mobile is working on an LTE network, and although the carrier isn’t announcing its first launch cities yet, users of the OpenSignal app have deduced that T-Mobile is testing its network in nine U.S. cities: Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas, New Orleans, New York, San Diego, Kansas City, and San Jose/the Bay Area. (You can split hairs about whether San Jose and “the Bay Area” are different cities or not.) OpenSignal reports that the network is delivering average download and upload speeds (not peak speeds, mind you) of 25Mbps and 8Mbps, respectively, with an average latency of 40ms.... Read more...
After Samsung announced its eagerly-anticipated Galaxy S4 smartphone to much acclaim at an event in NYC just days ago, Apple responded--by releasing a web page devoted to convincing users that the iPhone is better than every other phone. Taken alone, the “Why iPhone” page on Apple’s site is actually smart and helpful. It clearly and succinctly outlines all the reasons why the iPhone is a great product--which, of course, it is. However, in context, it stinks a bit of desperation. There was a time when Apple’s iPhone was the tech object of desire, a golden chalice from which... Read more...
Samsung is set to unveil the latest in its successful Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S4, on March 14th. Rumors abound as to what exactly the S4 has in store, but excitement over the new smartphone is high. The company is already teasing the S4 in a series of ads on YouTube. A young boy in a suit named Jeremy is entrusted with a mysterious box marked “UNPACKED”. He must keep the contents of the box a secret from everyone, including the girl next door and his own mother. Samsung Galaxy S3, soon to be replaced At a certain point, Jeremy can’t resist looking inside the box. He gasps.... Read more...
