One of the most frustrating elements of photography isn't rain or rough weather in general, but windows. No, not that Windows, but windows that do a better job of reflecting the scene behind you than let you see or capture a photo through it. I'm sure many of us have been in a hotel room where we would have loved to have been able to shoot the scene outside, but had to contend with reflections that ruined the shot. If you can relate, you should be happy to know that there's a solution, one that was just discussed at the ongoing SIGGRAPH conference. Called "A Computational Approach for Obstruction-Free... Many adventure types who like to record their stunts turn to GoPro, a name that's become synonymous with action videos. However, there's rising competition in the field. Count Polaroid among the ones looking to take market share away from GoPro, which it plans to do with its Cube+, a next generation lifestyle action camera that was first introduced at CE Week last month. The Cube+ retains the original Cube's 35mm cube-shaped form factor. Also like the original, the Cube+ comes in "fun colors" with optional accessories. One thing that's unique about the Cube and Cube+ is that presence of an integrated... Read more...
Creating VR content that revolves around camera-captured footage is difficult. The biggest challenge is getting the multiple cameras required to be positioned correctly, and beyond that, there's also the hurdle of getting all of the cameras to work in unison. Well, with a brand-new product called Jump, and a partnership with GoPro, Google is soon to offer an extremely compelling option. Well, assuming you don't mind shelling out about $8,000 for the 16 GoPro HERO4 cameras that will be needed, that is. As seen in the shot above, each one of the 16 cameras... Read more...

Prepare to meet Lily, the world's first throw-and-shoot camera and the first product from Lily Robotics. Smartphones are capable of so many wonderful things that go beyond the realm of simply making phone calls. They're essentially handheld PCs, and one day soon, they'll also be companions to your 3D printer -- you'll be able to snap a picture of an object using your phone's special 3D lens, which will capture the necessary information for your 3D printer to make a real-life replica. This is what researchers at Caltech are working on. It's a new high-resolution 3D image sensor that can make an exact copy of an object for a 3D printer. When you snap a photo of an object you want to create, the sensor... Read more...

Watching live concerts on YouTube is about to get a bit more immersive thanks to some fancy new camerawork that’s currently in the testing phase. YouTube is introducing a new feature that allows viewers to dynamically change cameras while playing back a video. There is currently one video on YouTube that supports multiple camera angles, and it’s a live performance by indie artist Madilyn Bailey. The additional camera angles show up as small thumbnails on the right-hand side of the screen and periodically update to give viewers a reasonably up-to-date view of what’s going on in front of each camera.... Just over a month ago, we brought you the amazing story of Les Baugh, a Colorado man that spent 40 years as a shoulder-level double amputee as a result of an electrical accident. Through the help of two Modular Prosthetic Limbs, Baugh was able to perform tasks that many of us take for granted like moving his “bionic” arms and fingers, and lifting/grasping objects. That story hit me right in the gut, and we have another heart-warming story for you today — this one involves former U.S. Air Force Veteran Mark Cornell, who has been legally blind for the past 20 years. Cornell, who serves as the President... Read more...
Investors in GoPro hit the panic button yesterday after it came to light that Apple was granted a bunch of patents, one of which is for a wearable camera design. What they're worried about is the competition that Apple brings to the table -- at present, when it comes to wearable cameras, there's the GoPro's lineup and a handful of non-threatening also-rans. Apple filed the patent application back in March 2012, which describes a camera that can be mounted on things like bike helmets, scuba masks, handlebars of a motorcycle, and the front of a surfboard. The patent application... Read more...
HTC is best known for its line of smartphones, especially its flagship HTC One series; just don't peg the Taiwanese company as a one trick pony. More recently, HTC launched it RE camera. While it's not quite the GoPro competitor as speculated prior to its release, it does look like a nifty device, and it's getting even niftier -- at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, HTC announced that its RE camera now supports live streaming to YouTube. At the moment, only Android device owners can participate in the streaming fun. After applying a free... Read more...
