Just as tires and wheels aren't the same thing, the World Wide Web (WWW) and Internet are also separate, albeit just as intertwined. If you already knew that, pat your self on the back or grab a cookie -- you're in the minority, according to a Web IQ quiz conducted by Pew Research in which just 23 percent of respondents correctly selected (or guessed) "False" when asked if the Internet and WWW are the same.In stark contrast, 83 percent of respondents were able to correctly identify Bill Gates as the technology leader portrayed in a photo. It's the question with the least amount of wrong answers,... Read more...
After much speculation and a churning rumor mill, Microsoft has named Satya Nadella as its third CEO, effective immediately. The only other two people to sit in the big chair at Microsoft have been Bill Gates himself and Steve Ballmer. “During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Gates. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the... Read more...
Have you ever done a secret gift exchange and had a fantasy that your secret Santa would be a billionaire and shower you with gifts? One Reddit user who participated in a massive Reddit Secret Santa 2013 gift exchange knows how that feels. Well, sort of. Reddit user Rachel (NY1227)’s secret Santa was none other than Bill Gates. Bill Gates was and is a genius, and his brilliance and leadership brought to life the juggernaut that is Microsoft, but of course, he and his company made some missteps along the way. (And continue to do so.) Some of them were large, some were tiny, but something that millions of users had to live with every day was the Ctrl+Alt+Del keyboard command. Originally developed by early coders as a way to quickly soft boot a machine that was acting up, Microsoft took the command and baked it into Windows. It became a tool for bringing up the Task Manager as well as for logging in to Windows. In an onstage... Read more...
According to a report from Reuters, Tesla chief Elon Musk and his billions of dollars have backed out of FWD.us the political advocacy group co-founded by such tech luminaries as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Dropbox’s Drew Houston, and LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, among others. Musk did not make public his reason for leaving, but he apparently took issue with the support FWD.us gave to certain senators, at least one of whom is in favor of the Keystone XL oil pipeline and oil drilling in Alaska. The advocacy group funded ads for senators who have taken sympathetic positions... Read more...
It’s perhaps as perfect a marriage as two educationally-minded can have: PBS and TED (of the famous TED Talks) are teaming up to produce a one-hour special on the public network called “TED Talks Education”, which airs Tuesday evening at 10/9 central. Although TED Talks tend to be fascinating, PBS and partner WNET (a New York public broadcaster) reworked the 18-minute TED format down to 5- to 8-minute segments per speaker. Topics will focus on education and in particular issues surrounding high school dropout rates, and the show will mix in clips of young people talking about... Read more...
For many, the idea of becoming a coder sounds like a terribly difficult if not esoteric thing, a skill set as exclusive as brain surgery or rocket science. And while being good at coding will open virtually an unlimited number of doors, it’s not as unattainable as it may seem. Code.org is a website designed to both spread the word that there are tens of thousands of vacant jobs for programmers out there and also provide an “authoritative database of all programming schools” available, both online and at physical locations. You can also begin to learn to code right there on the... Read more...
