If you live in Canada, go ahead and stop reading now to avoid any feelings of jealously and resentment. That's because Samsung is offering one heck of a bundle offer to U.S. residents -- purchase a select 4K SUHD television and receive a 32GB Galaxy S6 smartphone for free, zip, zilch, nada! That's a tantalizing offer that could be of interest to anyone shopping a TV or phone. It's an especially good deal if you're looking to upgrade your aging television to a 4K Ultra HD model. The only caveat is that you have to stick with a handful of specific models, those being the Samsung JS9500 (65-inch),... Read more...
Ever since the 4K consumer resolution first hit the scene, one of the biggest hurdles in adoption has been price. Well, as with most things tech, things have dramatically improved over time, and I think it's safe to say that we've reached a point where a lack of adoption right now has little to do with price. AOC's U2870VQE is a good example of why. The U2870VQE, for starters, is a 28-inch screen - so it's hardly teeny tiny. Yet, despite that, and the fact that it boasts a 3840x2160 resolution, it's currently available on sale for $349 at Microcenter (SRP is $499; Amazon currently has it for $466).... Read more...
Digging into software code doesn't carry the same excitement and dangers Nicholas Cage faces in his National Treasure movies, but it does lead to cool discoveries nonetheless. And if you dive into the code for the latest beta release of Apple's forthcoming OS X El Capitan operating system, you'll uncover references to a couple of new products. The first is a new 4K version of the 21.5-inch iMac. Apple's current generation 21.5-inch iMac sports an LED-backlit Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) display with Intel HD Graphics 5000, Intel Iris Pro Graphics, or an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M GPU with 1GB of GDDR5... Samsung announced two new monitors today, both of which support AMD FreeSync. Manufacturers typically launch the lower-end model first, but today the 28-inch Samsung U28E590D is available and it’s the less-expensive, 24-inch U24E590D that will be arriving July 26. FreeSync is AMD’s well-received response to NVIDIA’s G-Sync, which has also earned its share of praise. The technologies provide smoother graphics, particularly in video games, which is why Samsung is targeting these new screens at gamers. Samsung U24E590DBoth the Samsung U24E590D and the U28E590D are 4K (3840x2160) displays with HDMI... Read more...
Thin is in these days. It seems as though manufacturers are always looking to deliver the thinnest smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers (sometimes at the expense of functionality, as witnessed by the new 12-inch MacBook). That quest to down another bottle of SlimFast has not been lost on Sony, which is debuting its latest range of Ultra HD TVs. Your smartphone is probably thicker than Sony’s new X900C 4K Ultra HD TV, which hits shelves this week. The new TV is not quite 0.2 inches thick, making it resemble a picture hanging on your wall, rather than a 55-inch or 65-inch screen. Super-slim... Read more...
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series has been wildly successful for many years now, offering some of the edgiest story lines, game play tactics and objectives the gaming industry has ever seen. With psychopathic main characters, you are left in the depraved communities of Los Santos and Blaine County, to walk a path few would dare choose in real life, committing nefarious acts, robbing and pillaging to complete your objectives. In short, it's rather entertaining that you're tasked with leaving a virtual world worse off than you found it, consequences be damned. But if you're reading this, you're... Read more...
It's official -- there's a new Blu-ray specification called Ultra HD Blu-ray, and just as the name implies, the new spec represents a bump in resolution to 3840x2160, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced this week. To go along with the new spec, BDA came up with a new logo to delineate Ultra HD Blu-ray products. Ultra HD Blu-ray is more than just an increase in resolution, though that alone should be a selling point for anyone that's ponied up for a 4K television or monitor. In addition to matching 4K streams in resolution, the Ultra HD Blu-ray format enables delivery of a significantly... Read more...
There's nothing wrong with being an early adopter of new technologies and products, you just have to understand that inevitably something better, faster, and/or less expensive will follow whatever it is you just recently paid a premium for. Case in point is Panasonic's 20-inch Toughpad 4K tablet -- the revamped standard edition model now sports a 5th Generation Intel Core i5 vPro processor and costs half as much as first generation Performance SKU when it debuted earlier this year.Less than a year ago, the Toughpad 4K was wielding an Intel Core i7 3687U vPro processor, a dual-core part clocked... Last month, we were made aware of a number of new features that will make it into the next generation Apple TV. The media streamer is tipped to feature an Apple A8 processor, “well beyond” 8GB of internal storage, support for Siri, and its own App Store that will deliver big-screen accommodating applications and games. Today, we’re learning from BuzzFeed one feature that will not be coming to the Apple TV: 4K video support. 4K support is just now coming online with streaming services like YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, and Netflix; and according to BuzzFeed’s sources, "4K is great, but it's still... Just when you thought you've already seen the coolest drone footage ever, some guys come along with a 30 pound unit and pro camera equipment that supports 4K resolution at a staggering 1,000 frames-per-second. While the content itself is somewhat awe-inspiring, it's incredibly impressive from a technical standpoint as well. Most people who hange a camera like a GoPro from the bottom of a drone, wind up with a complete system that weighs just a couple of pounds. The folks at Brain Farm didn't just want to take things a step further - it's safe to say they've scaled the entire staircase. The camera... Read more...
Yesterday, NVIDIA announced the launch of its GeForce GTX 960M and GTX 950M mobile GPUs. The superior SKU, the GTX 960M, features a 1096 MHz core clock, 2500 MHz GDDR5 memory, and 640 CUDA cores. “So, if you’ve been itching to take your gaming on the go with a portable notebook design, now’s your chance to play with the big boys,” bragged NVIDIA. ASUS is definitely playing with the big boys with its all-new Republic of Gamers (ROG) G501 gaming notebook. The G501 measures just 0.81-inches thick and weighs in at 4.54 pounds. The chassis is constructed out of aluminum and features red highlights along... Read more...
Qualcomm is launching four new SoC SKUs today in an effort to add increased performance and beefed up functionality for mid-range smartphones. The new SoCs include the Snapdragon 415/425 and Snapdragon 618/620. The Snapdragon 415 and 425 are based on an octa-core Cortex A53 architecture and bring 64-bit support, ARMv8 instructions, and Quick Charge 2.0 support to the table. On the graphics side of things, the Snapdragon 415 and 425 now pack in an Adreno 405 GPU. The Snapdragon 415 and 425 seem pretty evenly matched up until this point, but there is one spec that differentiates the two SoCs: LTE... Read more...
Dell has updated what it claims is the world's thinnest and lightest mobile workstation, the Precision M3800. Checking in at a svelte 0.31-0.71 (H) by 14.65 (W) by 10 (D) inches and weighing only 4.15 pounds, we won't argue that claim, though what's equally impressive is the collection of hardware and features. Stealing the show is a 15.6-inch UltraSharp touch display with a 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) resolution and IGZO2 technology, along with Corning Gorilla Glass for added durability. The upgraded display gives road warriors the ability to view their work in much higher detail, along... Read more...
Earlier today, we brought you news of the exciting new XPS 13 notebook, refreshed Alienware 15 and 17 notebooks, and the availability of the Venue 8 7000 Series tablet that was originally announced in September of last year. But those products aren’t the only ones that Dell has on display here in Las Vegas, there are still a few more products lurking in the shadows… Dell’s Inspiron laptops might not have the same flair as the XPS or Alienware lineups, but they’re still workhorse machines that will get the job done with little fuss. The company today launched the Inspiron 15 7000 Series, which —... Read more...
