YouTube to Dump IE6 Support?

It's hard to believe people are still using Internet Explorer 6, but it's true. In fact, Net Applications says that around 17% of users are still using the creaky old tab-less browser. You can expect it to be a lot less popular once YouTube dumps support of it, however.

Yes, those who are working for companies that still require IE6 (and there are some!) are screaming "no!" right about now. Past reports have indicated a lot of YouTube viewing happens at work.

Reports show evidence that YouTube is going to start phasing out IE6 support. A message to a TC user who went to YouTube shows the text:
"We will be phasing out support for your browser soon. Please upgrade to one of these more modern browsers."
The site then links to these "more modern" browsers, Chrome, IE8, and Firefox 3.5.

Interestingly, one might expect the site to simply link to IE8, as that's the latest version of the browser YouTube will phase out. However, instead it links not just to three of the most modern browsers (Opera fans probably say "Boo"), but puts Chrome first.

Heheh. Now why would Google do that?

What about the millions of Windows Mobile 6.x phones that will have flash support soon but no support for the IE6 browser they'll have as their default. Some phone vendors will probably install Opera or Skyfire to get around that.
