Windows Azure, Office 365 Barf as Xbox One Goes Online, Microsoft Denies Issues are Related

Talk about bad timing. A collection of Microsoft's online services all suffered an outage just as the Xbox One was launching to retail. For a period of time, Xbox.com was knocked offline, with outages also reportedly affecting Microsoft.com, Outlook.com, and Office 365. These first occurred in late afternoon on November 21.

All these services are hosted by Windows Azure, which suffered a full-service interruption that lasted for several hours around the globe. According to Microsoft, the outages weren't due to extra load put on networks caused by the Xbox One launch, nor was Azure itself to blame. Instead, Microsoft says it probably had something to do with a DNS name service glitch.

It's not clear just how severe the outages were. Some users reported not being able to access TechNet, MSDN, and Microsoft.com, though CNET says it had no trouble visiting any of those sites during the outage.

"Microsoft can confirm that all online services have been restored," a company spokesperson told CruxialCIO in an email. "We are investigating the root cause of the disruption and will continue to keep customers updated as information becomes available."

Meanwhile, the Xbox One was the most successful Xbox launch to date. Microsoft said it sold more than 1 million consoles in less than 24 hours.
