Virident Introduces TechIon PCIe SSD

Fusion-io just stepped up in a major way earlier in the year, and now it's looking like more and more PCIe SSDs are hitting the airwaves. Is it finally time for enterprise storage to make the move to the consumer realm? Virident isn't a company that most average consumers are familiar with, but as hard-hitting flash-based storage solutions become more and more prominent, we're likely to see these enterprise companies bleeding over to more and more homes. The TechIon PCIe SSD is the company's latest trick, capable of delivering up to 300,000 I/O operations per second (IOPS) with a 4 KB block size on mixed read-write workloads.

It's said to be ideal for data-intensive workloads such as databases, business analytics, simulation, visualization, and high-performance computing, and is implemented in a high-density, low-profile PCIe-compliant form factor. As with most of these high-end devices, no prices are mentioned in the press release, but we're looking forward to the next-generation of storage. So long, HDDs. It's been real!

Virident’s tachIOn™ PCIe SSD Delivers Industry’s Highest Sustained Performance with Enterprise-Class Reliability

Worldwide Customers and Partners Adopt High-Capacity Virident tachIOn SSDs to Accelerate Application Performance
SNW Spring 2011

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Virident, a leading provider of high performance, enterprise-class PCI Express solid-state storage solutions, today announced that customers and partners around the world are capitalizing on the benefits of its PCI Express (PCIe) solid state drives (SSDs), which eliminate I/O bottlenecks in today’s applications. The Virident tachIOn™ SSDs deliver sustained performance of up to 300,000 I/O operations per second (IOPS) with a 4 KB block size on mixed read-write workloads. Virident’s tachIOn delivers several times the performance of competing PCIe SSD products and is hundreds of times faster than hard disk drives. The Virident PCIe-based SSDs are ideal for data-intensive workloads such as databases, business analytics, simulation, visualization, and high-performance computing. Virident will exhibit its high-performance, high-reliability SSDs at SNW Spring 2011, booth 516, April 4-7, 2011.

“This relationship was formed in response to demand for Virident’s tachIOn SSD solution in Japan, where predictable, sustained performance and enterprise-class reliability are critical factors to success, making it the ideal solution for the Japanese mission-critical enterprises”

The Virident solution has already demonstrated significant return on investment for its customers. “The tachIOn PCIe SSD card has helped us greatly in reducing our index build times for our search engine at iQMedia,” said Lakshmi Venkataswamy, CTO and co-founder of IQMedia Corp. “We are now able to build search indexes five times faster, allowing us to provide better service for our clients.”

The Virident SSD storage devices are implemented in a high-density, low-profile PCIe-compliant form factor and engineered with an innovative modular design that can be deployed in all industry-standard servers. "This relationship was formed in response to demand for Virident’s tachIOn SSD solution in Japan, where predictable, sustained performance and enterprise-class reliability are critical factors to success, making it the ideal solution for the Japanese mission-critical enterprises,” said Naoki Ike, general manager, IT Engineering Unit of Sumisho Computer Systems in Japan. “tachIOn is the densest, highest-performance PCIe SSD in the market. The compact size takes only a single slot in a 1U or 2U servers.”

Virident’s tachIOn SSDs are uniquely architected for the highest reliability. The combination of their flash-aware RAID capability, advanced ECC and dynamic global wear leveling ensures that data integrity is sustained over the life of the product, providing enterprise-class reliability for mission-critical and business-critical applications.

“All our tests have shown that tachIOn not only delivers superior performance, two to three times more than other PCIe SSD products, but also is able to sustain this performance advantage under extreme workloads,” said Vadim Tkachenko, CTO of Percona Inc. “With Virident tachIOn you can consolidate 5-15 servers into a single server, providing significant TCO savings.”

Very nice, these combined with Intel's 10 Core Xeon hello power. The question of course is when they will be able to fit into the average businesses budget.

Yeah I agree the prices on these is very high. I could conceivably grab multiple SATA 3/6 interface SSD drives and run them in raid 0+1 cheaper faster and with a larger capacity.
