Verizon Wireless Posts BlackBerry Storm Update

As the first ever BlackBerry smartphone with a touchscreen, the BlackBerry Storm has generated a lot of buzz. Unfortunately for RIM, the press hasn’t been 100% positive, with headlines stating things claiming the BlackBerry Storm sucks. Not only did Wired and David Pogue from New York Times have less than favorable things to say, but Pogue’s readers also expressed negative views. Many of the complaints seem to be about sluggish performance, more so than the touch screen and actual features of the phone.

As we reported, a firmware update for the BlackBerry Strom was leaked in late November, which led to much hope for a fix to resolve some of the complaints users had of the phone. Now, Verizon Wireless has officially released the latest firmware update to the phone and all users. The OS version is 4.7.0.76 and the platform version is 4.0.0.96. The software upgrade originally started rolling out by means of the Desktop Software Manager and Web-based software. Now, the over-the-air version of the update has also started pushing its way to BlackBerry Storm devices.

Boy Genius Report got its hands on the latest update early, and says the update has fixed some issues, including better performance when using the phone’s accelerometer, improved battery life, and other fixes. However, BGR also reports that some problems remain (such as random keyboard disappearance).

Right now, it’s still hard to say if this update will be enough to turn things around for this suffering touch screen BlackBerry. We’ll just hope it improves things and that Verizon Wireless / RIM is still working on additional fixes to get this device completely up to par.
