Upcoming Diablo 3 Patch To Add Alternate Leveling System, Overhauled Legendary Items, Balanced Classes

Diablo III's launch and first few weeks were a complete disappointment. Even once these problems were ironed out, a number of players complained about major balance problems at the Inferno difficulty level and the static, boring nature of the item hunt once you hit level 60. Blizzard previously acknowledged that the game, as it currently exists, wasn't living up to player expectations. Now the company has gone a step further and begun discussing what it plans to offer to rejuvenate gameplay and make the game more fun.

Updated Features, Fresh Design

Diablo III
's attempt to balance MMO features with its classic gameplay created mixed expectations that the game has had trouble satisfying. The game wasn't designed for the sort of constant content updates that Blizzard sinks into World of Warcraft, but players were hitting Lvl 60, discovering that the game, at that point, is nothing but a Magic Find-driven loot hunt, and quitting. Blizzard hopes to lure such players back with a new, alternate leveling system. Once characters hit Lvl 60, they start over -- as Paragons. There are 100 Paragon levels in total.

Paragon characters get a custum border

Paragons will earn experience and core attribute bonuses, as well as 3% Magic/Gold Find per Paragon Level. This last is designed to dampen the prevalence of "gear-swapping." Currently, players will fight monsters in normal gear until they're all-but dead, than quickly switch to gear with a high Magic/Gold Find. This increases the chance of finding rare and powerful items. Now, MF/GF percentages will top out at 300% -- an additional bonus that Lvl 100 Paragons will earn 'naturally.' Blizzard states that this will  "help us slowly and gently move Magic Find off of items in the future."

Legendary items in Diablo III are also receiving a much-needed overhaul. To date, Legendaries -- Uniques were the Diablo II equivalents -- offered too few core abilities and powers to be considered all that legendary. Scaling was also terrible; Legendary items were often far less powerful than common rares and AH purchases. Starting with 1.04, that's going to change. Legendaries will still have variable stats, but some core abilities will make them stand out. They're also getting a much-needed boost to core stats to help them stand toe-to-toe with regular mob drops.

Multiple character classes are also getting a balance overhaul. There's too much detail to go into the specifics here, but the bottom line is that Blizzard is pursuing the same sort of policy that it's used for years with World of Warcraft. Instead of nerfing abilities currently seen as "too good", the focus is on making other abilities better. This improves overall play balance by giving characters more freedom and opening the door to different playstyles rather than hammering mathematical standouts (and fun) into the ground.

Whether these changes will be enough to bring players back is an open question; Diablo III might benefit from the sort of semi-regular 'episodic' content that Valve once promised with Half Life 2. These changes, however, are a great step in the right direction -- and we're excited to see if they breath fresh life into a title that had tremendous potential.

Ugh, seriously? Who could possible want to level their character to 60 100 times? That's enough time to make me vomit. I put 30 hours getting one character there and I was completely burned out. I'm no sure how well this will play out for Blizzard. (I did make a brief reappearance when I found out about the magical land of Whimsyshire:D Kudos Blizzard.)

I don't think that is the way Paragon leveling will work, at least I hope not. More likely you will gain Paragon levels in the normal way you get to 60, so 160 levels in all. 60 reg, and 100 Paragon.

Yea, i don't believe blizzard is stupid enough to make people level up 6000 times. Only a handful of fanatic D3 players would spend a few years leveling up.

How far are you on your way to Whimsyshire? i heard it can be pretty difficult finding the right pieces.

I haven't tried to get there yet, but here is a guide you can use if you want:

After how bad they botched this game, the only patch Diablo needs is the "refund" patch.

You know, this is Diablo 3. If you expected anything significantly different from Diablo and Diablo 2, you're smoking some serious crack. Furthermore, the cash cow for Blizzard is not Diablo, but World of Warcraft, which is why Diablo 3 was given free to WoW subscribers who made a one-year commitment.

Lastly, if you can do better, I understand the 38 Studios facilities and most of the staff are available; get to work and show us how it's done.

After playing up to Act 3 Inferno, I lost the drive to keep playing. I couldn't even beat the game because of lack of decent enough gear to survive. I blame this on how much emphasis Blizzard put on the Auction House and how mandatory they made it. Sure, they say you could play without it and I would prefer to, but that would take how many god awful months to even get to Inferno with the terrible drop rates.

Lastly, it is not a question of whether I can do better. That is irrelevant because it is not my job to create games (although I've been learning 3D modeling in Blender as a hobby). It is not a sin to have high expectations of series which as had such successful prequels.

What type of character did you use? I'm soloing a sorceress, and I understand where you are coming from about trying to survive. I'm level 50 at the end of nightmare, and I don't think I'm going to make it past Diablo without gaining a few more levels. Might have to rerun act 3 or 4 to get there.

I never bought Diablo 3 and I do not play WOW. I have plaid WOW probably a total of 3 months in my lifetime and I never subscribed as it was not worth it to me there are way, way better MMO's then WOW has ever been. I have plaid MMO's since Ultima online was introduced and I was also a subscriber to EQ on day 8 of it's existence so I have a tad of experience, not to mention I have also been a guild leader on those as well as on several other MMO's and even worked in game support (Generally on new server introductions) on 3 different occasions for over a month for EQ.

Rapid1,

What MMOs do you play?

I already got a refund for Diablo III, but nice to see they are trying to make it better.

Finished normal, and reached act 2 of nightmare, and I just lost all will to play. I guess loot and dungeon crawling isn't for me. I enjoyed it enough that I might buy an expansion, though.

bought D3 a couple days after the release, and was totally annoyed about how hard it was to log in... eventually that got better, but after completing the game the 1st time, and restarting on the 2nd difficulty round, it quickly got boring.

so i started a second character, but that too was a little boring... im not sure why, but i loved and played D1 and D2 like no other games existed, lol... just doesn't seem to have the same appeal anymore i guess?

what really annoys me is that in single player mode the game still relies on your internet connection, i lag, freeze and disconnect... that is totally absurd when i am just playing solo... basically means the game is useless if i were to loose my internet connection~ zzzZZzzzzzzzzz

bottom line~ yeah i was disappointed... haven't logged on since ages... might try it out again now that there has been this re-balance/update patch~ or maybe ill keep playing LoL.

I'm at level 5 now, not far enough into it to even notice the changes but I am starting to get more into the game. Seems like playing with a party would add a lot to the experience.

it's simply impossible to play without the Auction House when all you're looting is s**t. i would have prefered to play without it too.

And what about the pvp mode ? Thought is was suppose to get out like 1 month after D3's launch. i think i just clearly lost patience with this game lol.
