Unveiling Durango: Microsoft Xbox Event Planned For May 21

Although some were expecting to see Microsoft debut a new Xbox system this month, it now appears that the company’s Xbox event will actually take place later. On “What the Tech”, Paul Thurrott said that the event scheduled for April 24th will actually occur on May 21st. (His Xbox musings begin around the 55-minute mark.)

The next Xbox is codenamed “Durango”, and we’ve been privy to plenty of leaks concerning what it will feature. For one thing, it may require an always-on Internet connection, and it will probably ship with the next version of Kinect. It should also have a better sensor, field of view, recognition of higher resolutions, and less latency. We expect to see USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, a 500GB hard drive, and the ability to multitask.

Inside, the new console will rock an eight-core 1.6GHz processor, 800MHZ GPU, 8GB of DD3 RAM, 802.11n WiFi, and gigabit Ethernet. Durango will also likely cost a pretty penny; Thurrott said that the cost will be something on the order of $500.
