Unlimited Music Coming Soon To PSP Through Qriocity Cloud Service

Sony has been digging deeper into the media content distribution and sales business lately, as with most other console makers. Nintendo and Microsoft are also using their game consoles to sell media, movies and all sorts of content, but the PlayStation 3 and PSP seem particularly poised to make an impact. Both are multi-media centric, and both are well connected with the PlayStation Network.

Today, Sony announced that a feature of the PS3 would be coming to the PSP, bringing with it a slightly different twist. Qriocity is currently used to provide movies and other content to the PS3, but the version coming soon to the PlayStation Portable will be focused on music. Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity is the name of the service, and it will be a standout feature in the upcoming PSP software update, bringing the console to v6.35.

Sony calls the service a new, cloud-based, digital music service from Sony that will give music lovers access to millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud, and you'll be able to spot it and access it via a new XMB icon. The company has yet to say when the new software will ship, but select PSP owners are already seeing glimpses of it in the Store. Shouldn't be too long now.

Also, some are speculating that an all-you-can-download music service on the PSP could foreshadow a service coming to a future PSP-infused cellphone. Given Apple's reluctance to offer such a service for iTunes, it certainly sounds reasonable. In addition, the Media Go application for managing PSP downloadable content on your PC will be updated with enhancements to the user interface and advanced photo editing tools.

Only the newest of owners will unwittingly update their PSPGo firmware to get this feature (and lock out homebrew/emulators).

The PSP's always been a decent MP3 player, and there are plenty of other sources for cheap music... so I don't see this feature adding much value.
