TomTom Unleashes iPhone App

In June, we told you about TomTom’s plan to bring turn-by-turn navigation to the iPhone 3GS. Now that TomTom has officially launched its iPhone app, this plan has become reality. The application works with many of the iPhone’s controls, including its multi-touch display and accelerometer for portrait / landscape viewing. The app can also interact with your address book to provide easy directions to an entry in your contact list.

Like other TomTom navigational offerings, the iPhone app offers numerous points of interest and uses IQ Routes technology to help determine the best possible route, taking into account data that has been collected from millions of drivers. TomTom claims that IQ Routes enables drivers to reach their destination in less time up to 35% of the time.

Additional TomTom iPhone app features include:
  • Fast route planning and clear voice instructions
  • Automatic re-routing if a turn is missed
  • Route demo or map of route when trip planning
  • User interface fully optimized with iPhone
  • Night and day color mode
  • User interface available in 18 languages
  • 2D or 3D map display views
  • Points-of-interest search and call capabilities from iPhone
“With TomTom for iPhone, millions of iPhone users can now benefit from the same easy-to-use and intuitive interface, turn-by-turn spoken navigation and unique routing technology that our 30 million portable navigation device users rely on every day,” said Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director of TomTom. “As the world’s leading provider of navigation solutions and digital maps, TomTom is the most natural fit for an advanced navigation application on the iPhone.”

The TomTom app for iPhone 3G and 3GS users comes with a regional map from Tele Atlas and is available through http://www.tomtom.com/tomtom-app. Currently, there are map versions available for Australia, Western Europe, New Zealand, and the U.S. and Canada. The U.S. and Canadian version costs $99.99. The app requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. TomTom also offers a car kit for the iPhone and plans to offer a version of the application that is compatible with the iPod Touch and other iPhone models soon.

IS it worth $99 + a subscription fee? is it that much better than the $10 a month AT&T app? the cradle seems like a great idea but for the extra cost the low-end TomTom model is $130.

I work with TomTom on the App, and there is no subscription fee.  It is a one time purchase.  That means that in 10 months, it is the same has having paid nothing for an alternative that has a $10/month fee.  Additionally, many of the fee based apps(and some non subscription apps) do not have the entire map downloaded to the device.  This means if you loose your data connection, you loose your navigation which is not true for the TomTom app.

The app is not meant to directly compete with the stand alone PND, but rather as an alternative for people who want an all in one solution and might not purchase a PND.
