The Waterproof, Backlit Keyboard You've Always Wanted Is Finally Here

Now, this is interesting. Not the keyboard...well, yes, the keyboard as well, but we're primarily talking about the name of this company. Econo-Keys has just issued its newest keyboard, one that is said to be "waterproof." Maybe we're crazy, but wouldn't you only expect stripped-down keyboards from a company called Econo-Keys? The world is a crazy place, we tell ya!

The EKB-97-TP not only has a name you'll never remember, but it's definitely one of the most rugged and outdoor-ready ones that we have ever seen. It's a sealed design that keeps water out, yet it's still slim enough to be carried about without too much hassle. It also includes an integrated trackpad (rare for a keyboard) and number pad, not to mention a revised blue LED backlighting system that makes it easy to pound away on reports and e-mails through the night.

The company claims that this waterproof keyboard is great for field use and enterprises, but we could definitely see the unconventional consumer picking one up and seeing just how wet things could get before it stopped delivering Tweets. It will start shipping on March 8, 2010, and you can tell by the $196 price tag that this isn't designed for the average keyboard user. But it just might be perfect for the average coffee spiller.

• Fully sealed, IP67 case features no seams or crevices
• Touchpad with left- and right-click keys
• 97 keys, including 12 function keys
• 10-key numeric pad
• 5.25' USB cable connection
• Compatible with all Windows operating systems
• Plug-and-play setup requires no software installation or special drivers
• 14.93” x 5.52” x 0.38”
• 379.2 x 140.2 x 9.7 (mm)

IP67 keyboard protects against:
• Splashing, hose-directed and submerged water
• Bleach, alcohol and hospital-grade disinfectants
• Corrosive, abrasive, acidic and alkaline substances
• Dirt, dust, sand and other airborne debris
• Extreme temperatures

Ditto that.

This would have really come in handy for those dark, lonely nights I spent in front of a computer during my mid-teens...

BTW, gotta agree with Marco here. I'm loving my I-Rocks KR-6230-BK!

you can have some lonely dark nights with your origin now :D, You also never got us those inside pics :D lol (no rush)

haha, yeah. I could pop open the Origin PC and the lights inside would supply me with more than enough lighting to do whatever I need.

About the pics, sorry, everytime I turn the PC on, I quickly forget about everything else. Sad JK...believe it or not, I haven't had much time to play with it.

HA :D ur mind goes blank and all you see is the computer screen loading when pics for the inside pop up your like WOW THESE LOOK GREAT? BUT you skip right past it :(

How much lighting is in there O.o

Yeah but you're the kinda of guy that asks "is anal-retentive hyphenated" and you're a keyboard snob, so of course you don't like it.

You say that like those are bad qualities! :p

I'm with Marco: If it's not designed for top functionality and comfort, it might as well be any other $12 keyboard.

:D so is this made of rubber? time for some under water computering Wink

IMO these things suck big time. I had a flexible / fold able keyboard and the they feel terrible to type on. The keys swayed from side to side when you typed something.. Terrible feel is an understatement. Best part is they looked exactly the same as the one in pic here.

Waterproof membrane keyboards are nothing new, and are probably the technology that the negative comments above apply to. If this is a waterproof microswitch keyboard, they ought to say so and clear up the confusion.

I wonder why "keyboard condoms" aren't in vogue any more? Sure, they reduced the sensation of typing, but they did protect your keyboard from diseases, and prevented unfortunate incidents with peripherals like the hoochie mouse.

yeah i personally am fine with a regular keyboard

OWWW that price hurts. Are you sure they did not put some Gold or Diamond dust in it for something. Not that even that would justify this price for a keyboard!

0
+ -

they just didn't tell you but the screws are all pure gold ;)

They must be Inspector. As for a real keyboard what have you guys found to be the best keyboards. I as I mentioned need to get new keyboards for computers in my home. We do game as well so game abilities are a concern, but the main concern is general uses with that thrown in. So give me recommendations on best keyboard you have used!

Yeah this is totally set up for those one handed typists? The waterproof part is cool, but they really need to set it up as a gaming keyboard which can double as a DCC keyboard with hotkeys set up opposite the mouse for those late night deadlines!

I have seen something similar but without the backlit keyboard. I hear the military or people who are in extreme work environments could appreciate one of these. http://www.relaxtheback.com/ergotravel-keyboard-product-6547065
