Sony to Kill Off MiniDisc Walkman, Grief Counseling Not Needed

It's the end of an era for Sony's MiniDisc Walkman player, an era you may not have realized was underway. It doesn't matter now anyway, because Sony is reportedly stopping shipments of its soon-to-be-defunct music player that was never very popular in the U.S. to begin with.

Turns out that you crazy kids were more interested in cassettes, CDs, and now MP3 players, like the iPod and Zune. There just was never much demand for Sony's MiniDisc Walkman, which debuted nearly a decade ago in 1992. As of last March, Sony had only sold 22 million units.

We don't imagine anyone will shed a tear for the MiniDisc Walkman, but in case you're interested in snagging one to add your collection of discontinued products, you better act fast. Sony will stop shipments beginning in September.

I had nearly forgotten about the MiniDisc until I saw this article. Funny thing - I think I actually have one of these old players sitting in my basement! Wonder if I could convince someone it's a "collectors item?" Ha ha!

I am surprised this hadn't happened a long time ago. I haven't seen a minidisc player in ages.  Yet another Sony product that failed due to proprietary technology.  They always have to make their own damn medium.

"which debuted nearly a decade ago in 1992." - this should be nearly two decades....

Sony always introduces different product in the market. And Sony is famous from many years for electronics appliances. It's sound system is very good. Now a days Sony introduces iPod which reduces or eliminates the demand for Minidisc Walkman as it is easy to carry and better sounding system is better than Walkman.

So sad to hear this, Sad. I still have my and Sony miniDisc walkman/recorder.ATRAC codec system is the best thing about MiniDisc. Doesn't need a to have a "new and improved" minidisc player in order to listen to the sonic benefits of minidisc encoded by newer and much more improved versions of ATRAC codec.
