Sony Releasing Patapon 2 For PSP As Digital-Only

UMD movies -- remember those? Yes, they're the little discs that slide into the rear of Sony's PlayStation Portable, and it's been ages since a major motion picture was released on the format. In a crazy, wild world just years from now, we could be saying the very same thing about games.

In what Sony is describing as a "one time test case," the outfit is releasing the forthcoming title Patapon 2 as a digital-only title. In other words, the only way you're playing this game is if you download it. In case that's still not sinking in, Patapon 2 will be the first PSP game to ever be released without a disc. For what it's worth, the game will still see retail shelves, but those who buy the package pay an extra $4.99 for the luxury of taking home a download code inside of a plastic shell.

You see, Sony is hoping that individuals will opt for the $15 version; the version that will be available for download on May 5th via the PlayStation Store. If you're a PSP owner interested in the game, which version will you spring for? Would you be open to an all-digital game store in the future? Or are you just not ready to give up that physical media? Sony's official statement on the matter is below:

"We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content," Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA said. "The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history."

I'm pretty sure they are dumping UMD and most of the games for the next PSP will be downloads only or some type of memory card.

I have a PSP with a 8GB memory stick so I would spring for the DL copy. In fact, I have all of my games converted and stored on my memory stick because the UMD drive is slow at loading and it EATS the battery life.

Plus, its more convenient to carry just the PSP with 15 games loaded on the memory stick then to fool with UMD's. Its a handheld, so treat it like a handheld and bring on the digital media!

This is awesome. Anyone else think of a old walkman when they pop open UMD drive?
