Sony Announces PlayStation App for iPhone and Android

In a recent blog post, Sony said that it plans to launch the official PlayStation App "very soon." The upcoming app will work with iPhone and iPod touch devices running OS 4 and above, as well as most Android devices with OS 1.6 and above.

Sony didn't go into a whole lot of detail, but did say you'd be able to track your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends' games and online status with the upcoming app. You'll also be able to browse new games, news, and hardware for your PS2, PS3, and PSP devices, and there will be a bit of social networking baked in. Sony says you'll be able to share product and news announcements on Facebook and Twitter.

"There are tons of features we are planning to bring to this app in the next few months so keep an eye on the PlayStation.Blog for further announcements early next year."

We'll have to wait until the app actually ships before issuing a verdict, but so far this all looks pretty uninspiring. As InformationWeek notes, it looks as though Sony is using this app mainly for marketing purposes rather than bringing a Sony-branded gaming experience to two of the most popular mobile platforms in existence. Bummer.
