Seagate Ships SV35 Ultra-Reliable 3.5" Hard Drives

Turns out hard drives are useful for all sorts of things -- way more than just backing up your music, photos and other important documents. HDDs are critical in the enterprise space, and they're also vital in the surveillance realm. Seagate is recognizing that this week with the introduction of their 6th-generation of SV35 hard drives. The company is shipping these out starting today, with this 3.5" HDD engineered to meet the high demands of surveillance digital video recording, and of new high-capacity additions to the Pipeline HD family of purpose-built hard drives for consumer video applications.

The new SV35 supports capacities as high as 2TB, and they are approved for 24x7 video surveillance applications with a MTBF of more than 1 million hours. High reliability is crucial for HDDs in this space, and the new SV35s are backed with a 5-year warranty and a SATA 6Gbps data rate. Seagate isn't coming clean with pricing, but for a drive designed for this kind of beating, we doubt it'll be cheap.

SEAGATE UNVEILS 6th GENERATION OF SV35 HARD DRIVE TO MEET GROWING DEMAND FOR HIGH-CAPACITY, HIGH-PERFORMANCE STORAGE FOR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

SEAGATE ALSO SHIPS HIGH-CAPACITY PIPELINE HARD DRIVES THAT DELIVER INDUSTRY’S LEADING COMBINATION OF VIDEO STREAMING AND LOW-POWER PERFORMANCE

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- January 18, 2011 — Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) today began shipments of the sixth generation of SV35, a 3.5-inch hard drive designed to meet the high demands of surveillance digital video recording, and of new high-capacity additions to the Pipeline HD family of purpose-built hard drives for consumer video applications.

Unlike solutions primarily designed for consumer video recorders, SV35 hard drives combine the high performance, capacity and reliability for the exacting workloads of video surveillance recording and network surveillance video recorders. The Seagate SV35 now delivers up to 2TB of capacity to enable simple, scalable surveillance system storage design and is approved for 24x7 video surveillance applications with a MTBF of more than 1 million hours.

Backed by Seagate’s industry-leading 5-year warranty, the new SV35 delivers the highest Serial ATA performance – the blistering SATA 6Gb/second data rate – to support simultaneous recordings by multiple video surveillance cameras. The drive also offers the following capabilities to optimize storage performance and reliability:

    * ATA-7 streaming commands to fine-tune read/write performance for video or meta-data.
    * Temperature reporting and monitoring to optimize hard drive reliability.
    * Spin Control to enable power-on in standby mode or drive spin-down to reduce power consumption and increase reliability.
    * 2 Amp current spin-up limit to allow the use of the most energy-efficient and cool-running power supplies.

SV35 also is targeted for direct and network-attached JBOD surveillance systems.

Pipeline HD – Purpose-Built for Consumer Video Applications

Pipeline HD is now available in 1.5TB and 2.0TB capacities. The drive combines best-in-class performance, eco-friendly power consumption and quiet acoustics, making it ideal for media centers, consumer DVRs and other video streaming appliances. Performance-tuned for video recording and playback, Pipeline HD drives support at least 10 simultaneous streams of high-definition movie content, deliver bedroom-quiet acoustics and consume much less power than standard desktop hard drives.

Pipeline HD delivers industry-leading quality with the round-the-clock reliability required by today’s set-top box and DVR manufacturers. In addition, the power-thrifty 3.5-inch drive allows system designers to more easily meet low-power standards such as EnergyStar and reduce system costs by enabling the use of lower cost power supplies.

Pipeline HD drives exemplify Seagate leadership position in delivering eco-friendly storage with innovative recyclability, RoHS compliance and low halogen designs. Newsweek magazine recently recognized Seagate for its eco friendliness, ranking Seagate 170 in its environmental rating of 500 companies.

Pipeline HD is also available with Seagate Secure technology to improve content security and help content owners feel confident of the safety of licensed intellectual property.
