Sapphire's New Radeon 5970: It's Bigger Than Yours

Competition in the video card market can be pretty cutthroat, particularly when it comes to predicting the whims of the enthusiast market. Companies regularly vie for the title of Largest Pe... Fastest Video Card Available and they're willing to pull out all the stops to take home the crown. Case in point: Sapphire. The manufacturer's latest Radeon 5970 design was on display at CeBIT this year and packing enough firepower to perforate a burro at 20 paces.

This new Radstrosity packs 4GB of RAM (2GB per GPU) and cranks up both the GPU and memory clocks. The GPU clock is boosted from 725MHz to 850MHz (a 17 percent increase) while the memory clock ticks up 20 percent from 1GHz to 1.2GHz. This inevitably begs the question of whether or not it can run Crysis. In fact, it can eat Crysis for breakfast while munching on a side of DirectX 11. There's no word on what it'll cost, but we're staring at a triple-thick mammoth with what look like CPU coolers welded over the twin graphics engines. Sapphire outfits this card with two eight-pin PCIe power slots instead of an eight-pin/six-pin combo—no word yet on whether or not you'll actually need two eight-pin cables to use the card.

It doesn't play Crysis so much as it causes one. With your wife.

We're not sure why Sapphire didn't opt for a water-cooled card, but we'll still take two.

Holy mother monster video card byteman! When I dump my 285 I think I'll just get a 5870 (gotta get that third monitor first).

OMG!!! this is insane!!! LOL!! kinda thick though but baahh!!! no one cares!

I wonder when we will see a benchmark on this unit. Of course as I had mentioned the heat exhaust issues I don't like, and add to that it takes up 3 slots. I still would like to see how this monster works. If I was gonna blow this kind of cash though, I think I would be more likely to buy a 5970 and put a liquid cooler on it. I doubt the price would be much more anyways, and I could clock it further than a factory would as well on liquid cooling.

I have a similar cooling system on my Asus Tri-fansink. if doesnt cool well and just blows hot air around in my Antec 900 case.

I feel like in order to enjoy this card properly, you need to be in a self-preserved climate controlled room. The ambient temperature needs to be at a constant 15C with small, silent fans keeping airflow circulating in a venting motion.

Or, if you are a champion of champions, use the computer in a walk-in freezer.

No seriously, it needs a grill attachment =D

I wish i could get it but sadly i would probably have to rob a bank just to get one lol

Wow now that is a monster. The specs sound awesome, I don't know how much I like about that cooling setup. While it looks very effective for the card, what kind of heat does it add to the internal system, especially at a factory OC like that.

I'll take two in crossfire!

The fastest card on the planet just became the fastest monster on the planet.

I concur this haus just raised the bar, as if it needed raising to begin with.

Bigger than yours, but yet it's made in China...hmmm, I sense a contradiction! Love the quote Joel, "It doesn't play Crysis so much as it causes one. With your wife." LOL!

YA i was just about to comment on his quote too xD, I would love to try this beast out if only i can afford it! :(

Takes up 3 slots.... Could be an issue for some people, thought most likely not.

Waiting for the one that has the BBQ grill attached to the back.

It's pretty bad when your computer uses more power than your vacuum cleaner.

:D grill while u game whats better that that? Double grills? xD

It goes up to 11.

Makes my 4350 feel a little... inadequate. Heck, it makes the 5770 I was thinking of feel puny.

Before being too impressed with the specifications, shouldn't we wait until this monster has been properly tested ?...

Just the pictures alone are making us salivate. Oh, that and the idea of a BBQ grill attachment. lol

0

No henri :D we here drool over specs and when the monster gets tested we have a full pool to swim in and a great rig right beside it to BBQ and game! :D LMFAO

0

Well, Inspector, with all you chaps drooling over the specs, it's no wonder Sapphire considered a water-cooled system superfluous....

I lol'ed irl.

I think the assumption is that the bigger size will equate to a better performance. Unfortunately we've seen in nature that this isn't always the case.

but no hdmi?

I like the fact that it's a one PCI-E slot solution. Crossfire and SLI work wonderfully, but a one card solution is my preference any-day. It will probably have decent performance specs and we'll want one for sure until the new NVIDIA solution changes the landscape next month.

Any extra heat that it may develop would be insignificant in my CoolerMaster Storm Sniper case. It can cool practically any configuration it's so efficient.
