Sapphire Releases the Fastest Videocard on the Planet

If you're going to spend upwards of $700 or so on a videocard, you might as well make sure it's the fastest graphics card in the known universe, right? Better look into Sapphire's product line up then, and specifically, the company's new HD 5970 4G TOXIC Edition. With 4GB of GDDR5 memory, Sapphire's newest videocard boasts twice the amount of memory found on standard HD 5970 cards.

Clock speeds check in at 900MHz (core) and 4800MHz effective (memory), up from 725MHz and 4000MHz, respectively, on reference specs. But it isn't just the clockspeeds that have been goosed. Sapphire also beefed up the cooling with a customized heatsink/fan solution from Arctic Cooling. Featuring three low noise fans, the whole thing comes constructed with nickel plated heatpipes and fins.

No word yet on how much this will cost or when it will be available.

This is significantly faster than the standard model, and makes the SAPPHIRE HD 5970 4GB TOXIC Edition not only the fastest card in its class, but the fastest in the world*.
With twice the computing power of the highly acclaimed SAPPHIRE HD 5870 Series, this new HD 5970 model shares all the exciting features of the HD 5000 family – including support for the DirectCompute 11 instruction set of Microsoft DirectX 11, hardware tessellation and multi threaded communication with the system CPU. It also enables the acceleration of applications supported by ATI Stream, and the ability to display across three monitors simultaneously with ATI Eyefinity**. All of this comes with a modest active power consumption and ATI Powerplay Dynamic Power Management to achieve super-low power consumption in 2D and idle modes
The card is cooled by a customised solution from Arctic Cooling with nickel plated heatpipes and fins, featuring three low-noise dual ball bearing fans and developed specially to mate with the SAPPHIRE original design pcb. This efficient solution also provides scope for further performance tuning.
All of the SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series cards have an on board hardware UVD (Unified Video decoder) considerably reducing CPU load and delivering smooth decoding of Blu-ray™ and HD DVD content for both VC-1 and H.264 codecs, as well as Mpeg files. In the SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series the UVD has been enhanced to be able simultaneously to decode two 1080p HD video streams and to be able to display HD video in high quality with Windows Aero mode enabled. HDMI capability has also been upgraded to HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio support.
The SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series is supported by AMD's DirectX 11 WHQL certified graphics driver for Windows 7 and Vista which delivers support for all of the key DirectX 11 level features required for new gaming experiences and acceleration of next generation high performance applications.

That's a sweet looking design. I just hope this card doesn't start pushing prices into the $800 range or pretty soon we'll be buying computers for our video cards.

It might be an $800 card. But it most likely within most people's budget. There will always be cards are different price levels with the hot stuff being in the mid-range (such as the $200 price point). Just nice to see cards like this and drool over them.

Holy crap... 3 big fans (at least they have noise reduction) and 4GB of memory on that thing?  Looks like it would take up a ton of room too.  Yeah that would be pretty expensive lol.  If only I had that type of cash...

You're right on all counts Moe. According to this review, the card takes up 3 slots and shrieks at about 64 decibels...

No word on pricing yet but every indication points to beaucoup dollars.

64 decibels? Holy crap. You need to have a vacuum for it (exaggeration).

The card itself takes up 2 slots and the added fans and heat sinks take up an entire slot on its own. It's safe to say that you will most likely only be able to fit two of these things in most motherboards. It's not like you will need two, I think that's just overkill.

its technically the 5th fastest consumer grade graphics card on the planet... the Ares is still the reigning champ in true speed and processing power....

dayam thats an ugly card. but, its really not that loud in comparison, and keeps cool. bit* of overkill though if you ask me.
