Samsung To Launch Curved OLED Smartphone In Korea

Curved screens are nothing new, as we’ve seen curved TV screens from the likes of LG and Samsung, but the technology isn’t exactly common at this point. That may be starting to change, as a Samsung executive said that the company would be launching a curved-display smartphone in South Korea this October.

"We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October," said Samsung's head of strategic marketing for mobile DJ Lee. The device will have a plastic OLED display panel.

Unfortunately, that’s all he said in comments at a Galaxy Note 3 launch event, so there are no additional details to chew on.

Curved and bendable displays present the possibility for greater flexibility (pun!) primarily in mobile devices and for wearable computing. It’s not hard to imagine what you could do with a smartwatch that’s all screen and bends gracefully around the wrist, or a smartphone with a large that folds up into a wallet-sized clamshell, or what have you.

Of course, first companies like Samsung will have to produce such a display, and then make it inexpensive enough that anyone will want to buy it, but if Mr. Lee is to be believed, step one is happening days from now.
