The Chrome 400 GTX is the latest addition to the S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series, delivering exceptional graphics realism and stunning HD multimedia performance in optimized desktop and media PCs. Based on the low profile PCI Express Gen 2 graphics card specification, the Chrome 440 GTX is ideally suited for PC users who wish to enhance their PCs to provide dual-stream Picture-in-Picture (PiP) 1080p Blu-ray Disc playback with the latest DirectX 10.1 / OpenGL 2.1 unified shader architecture.  The Chrome 440 GTX uses the latest GDDR3 memory for optimized memory bandwidth and native HDMI connectivity for the latest digital displays.

The S3 Graphics Chrome 440 GTX outperforms the current market leader in its class by over 15% in 3D benchmarks and rendered frames-per-second in the most popular DX10 and DX9 games.

"S3 Graphics has once again brought to market another high performance product to complement our growing portfolio of segment leading graphics and video technologies," said Dr. Ken Weng, General Manager of S3 Graphics. "The multimedia-rich Chrome 440 GTX has tremendous value by providing an immersive 'digital consumer' experience for gaming and home entertainment."

I wonder what they compared it against.  I can't imagine it getting many frames-per-second in any DX10 game.  But I'm glad there is a little more competition in the graphics world.

I,ve must have missed something in my down time when I was away from computers for a couple of years because I thought S3 was more into onboard graphics and propritory computers, and low cost pci cards!

The card is aimed at HTPCs or low-cost gaming PCs. Apparently the "the current market leader in its class" is the Radeon HD 3470. This chart on their site shows it beating the HD 3470 in 3DMark 2006.

It really is.  My dad is still running an MX440 in his compter.  Does everything he needs perfectly, which is mostly photoshop and videos.  It's still good enough for most average users.  Just don't try running any games newer than Half-Life 2 on it.  I suspect this Chrome 440 will be similar - good enough for most people, plus HD videos.  Just don't try running any games newer than Half-Life 2. ;-)

I'd personally be buying 3DFX, if they were still around.
