Rumor: IBM Mulling AMD Purchase?

As with all rumors, take the following story with a grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from either AMD or IBM.

Whenever AMD shares are low enough the buyout rumors begin.  The name IBM is often tossed around as a potential buyer, but it seems unlikely considering their focus on software over hardware recently.  Still, the rumors persist based on IBM's manufacturing capacity and a few joint-venture research projects.

“IBM of Armonk, New York, has had a research and development expense-sharing agreement with AMD, and analysts have speculated that AMD might want to use IBM's East Fishkill, New York, chip-fabrication plant to build microprocessors.”

If IBM does decide to get back into the game, it seems that they'll probably be lamenting the choice to offload their hard drive interests to Hitachi and their PC business to Lenovo.

In a way.. I wish this were true. IBM have amazing research and development and if anyone could take what AMD has and turn it around they could.

No doubt about it, they would be a potent combo.

this would spell disaster for intel i think, and if it happened, then we would see the same thing as when intel had nearly no competition for the desktop market

I agree no copetition is not a good thing.

Well I dont see how this would be a disaster at all. IBM has the means to compete against intel. They helped develop the Cell processor so they have brilliant research and development. Something I would say AMD lacks along with the Fab plants which IBM also has. I could see IBM taking the current AMD technology and Improving it greatly. My biggest concern is for ATI. I hope they continue their excelent work and continue to put out high end graphics boards. It was painful seeing 800 dollar nvidia ultras. Imagine if there was no competition at all for nvidia.

i meant that if IBM and AMD team up, then they would not only compete, but i think dominate intel, AMD has the ideas, while IBM has the knowledge and resources to develop it.

dangerous combo, while i love both IBM and AMD i have to feel for intel on this one

If Intel continues to press the advantage than AMD will coninue to be #2 for a good long while regardless!

Hi All,

I agree with you Recovering. Intel has such a huge advantage now that even if IBM were to buy AMD/ATI it would take considerable time before they would be in a position to challenge Intel.

Of course if IBM bought AMD then an Intel/Nvidia merger would be inevitable - it's written in the stars...

I'm not sure if it will happen, but it would be the best suited company to purchase them considering x86 licensing. But I doubt that would happen considering AMD is part of IBM's partner for their pushing of process technologies. Of course not AMD being a partner as in developing, but they get a lot of help from IBM on their process nodes/architecture issues.

It would be cool to see a "darkhorse" pop out of the woodwork and start competing neck & neck with Intel... anyone know if this is even possible?

Recover: Doubt it, with time, Nvidia might be able to get up there in the next 10 years or so. They just entered the CPU market after all, but mostly for mobile devices. But considering how bad their standing is with intel, I doubt they'd get the x86 license...Which completely shuts them out of the picture. In terms of IBM, they were muscled around by Intel in the past, but considering IBM's funding, they are pretty much atm the only MASSIVE competition if IBM jumped into the picture.

If IBM were to acquire AMD I'm sure they'd be limited to producing the CPU chips for a while, they just sold their desktop line rights, some where in that agreement I'd bet they agreed not to produce destops for a given period of time.

With their resources and research and development capibilities they'd probably give Intel a run for it.  If AMD had more research and design money they'd give them a run.  It'd be good for prices and drive innovation.   Sure Intel might have to lower prices but their kinda high any way. (IMO)

I'd love for it to happen, but I doubt it. As sad as it is to say..AMD is on their own right now. Their potential buyout value is literally fantastic, considering they are the #2 chipmaker in the world, their purchase value is quite low atm. But I doubt anyone will....One this is for sure though, AMD will never go under, if they are in danger, they will get money from somewhere...that's just a 100% fact.

They'll be around, I'd love to see IBM pick them up, not going to happen.  If nothing else Intel should kick them a couple billion just for making them look good.
