RIM Promises 70,000+ BlackBerry 10 Apps At Launch

Apps are a key component of any mobile operating system. RIM recognizes this and is working hard to ensure its upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform will have plenty of apps to offer when it launches. In a recent interview with Forbes, RIM's chief marketing officer Frank Boulben said there will be more than 70,000 BlackBerry 10 apps when it launches on January 30th.

Although this is an impressive number for a mobile platform at launch, it's still relatively small in comparison to what Google and Apple currently offer in their respective app stores. Both of these mobile platforms have more than ten times the number of apps RIM plans to offer when BlackBerry 10 launches. Even Windows Phone Marketplace has an estimated 100,000 apps.

RIM has been struggling to compete in recent years but many company executives are working towards and hoping for a great comeback. Boulben indicated RIM has more than 80 million BlackBerry subscribers globally. Even amidst its struggles, RIM gained an additional 2 million subscribers last quarter.

How many of those are going to be sloppy ports over from Windows Mobile, Android and iOS and how many are going to be well flushed out applications specifically for Blackberry's though.

To release that many applications at launch makes the think that RIM is aiming for quantity over quality here.

Windows Marketplace has been around for 3+ years now and barely has 100,000 apps, to be near that number at launch just seems suspicious.

Eh, I think RIM can pull this off. They usually always had less apps then Android and Apple (at least when I had my old wi-fi less Storm). As for sloppy ports, they have had time to work on ports and still have time to gets these apps in form. I just hope this new device of theirs can turn things around. Android and Apple need competition.
