Pentax Crashes DSLR Party with Colorful K-r Camera

Pentax Crashes DSLR Party with Colorful K-r Camera

The point-n-shoot category is filled with colorful cameras of all shapes and sizes, and some even sport cartoon characters on and around the body. Is this where the DSLR market is headed, too? We don't know, but one thing's for sure -- the era of black and silver only DSLR cameras has come to a close. That's because Pentax has decided to shake things up with a colorful new line of digital SLR bodies so that potential owners can "choose on that matches their personal style."

The K-r, as Pentax is calling its newest DSLR, comes in red (as shown) or classic white, and who knows, maybe more colors will follow. Despite the toyish exterior, however, the K-r is every bit a bona fide DSLR with the specs and price tag to match.

Kicking things off is a 3-inch LCD screen with 921,000 dots of resolution. The K-r boasts a 12.4 megapixel CMOS sensor, 1/6000 second shutter speed, the ability to shoot widescreen 720p HD videos at 25 FPS, built-in shake reduction no matter which lens you use, a dust removal mechanism, and more.

Pricing starts at $800 for the body alone or $850 with an 18-55 kit lens thrown in, which we reckon ranks as the most expensive red-colored digital camera ever made.

similar specs to a nikon D90, what I have. This has shake reduction on the camera, which is nice because with Nikon you must buy more expensive VR (vibration reduction) lenses. The D90 takes it on the image sequence, at 9 shots per second.

looks pretty cool

IINM D90 on paper only has 4.5 FPS. K-R is faster

50 bucks extra per lens for the first two listed is a good price.

The 55-300 lens is a bit pricey.

This looks like a nice DSLR for people looking to pick up a first one.
