PS3 Loses Linux Support on April 1st, No Fooling!
Out of the 365 days that make up our calendar year, Sony has chosen to release its next system software update for the PlayStation platform on April 1, otherwise known as April Fool's Day. Install it, however, and the joke's on you, at least if you're planning to roll with an alternate OS. That's because the optional update will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on systems prior to the current slim models.
"The decision was made to protect the intellectual property of the content offered on the PS3 system as well as to provide a more secure system for those users who are enjoying games and other entertainment content on the PS3," said Julie Han, a Sony spokesperson.
No matter what the explanation, this will come as a blow to those few who purchased a PS3 specifically with the intention of installing Linux. The 3.21 firmware update isn't mandatory, but for those who choose not to install it, they will miss out on a few key features, such as the ability to sign in to the PlayStation Network and use associated network features, such as online features of PS3 games and chat, Sony says.
