Nintendo Confirms Second Generation Wii Console for 2012

One thing you learn in Boy Scouts is that where there's smoke, there's usually fire. We bring this up because there's been a lot of smoke lately about Nintendo's second generation Wii console, and as we suspected, it wasn't unfounded. Nintendo today confirmed that, yes, it's working on a successor to the Wii, and yes, it will launch in 2012.

"Nintendo Co., LTD. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011," Nintendo said.

So will this new console support HD? A new online infrastructure? Motion controls? Storage space? Slow down little Johnny, those are good questions, all of them, unfortunately Nintendo isn't yet ready to divulge those details. You won't have to wait long, however, as the company will will show off the system at E3.

"We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles," Nintendo said.

Until then, we'll keep our ear close to the rumor mill.

Well, I've heard rumors that it will have a revamped version of the R700 graphics processor.

If that's true then it'll put the Wii II miles beyond the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I hate waiting!!!! haha, I don't have a current wii but I like when new gaming tech comes out. I was just reading about the r700, that would be crazy. I'm not sure how crazy they will get with it because I'm assuming they want to keep the price down so it will be available to the masses like the current wii.

The R700 should be financially viable because the prices for that architecture have dropped significantly, especially if you look around for prices for the 4890 on eBay.

I will be waiting for E3 to see what Nintendo has to offer :) I really enjoyed the Wii and most of the games on it for casual gaming. I have no doubt that they will have HD and better motion controls. Hopefully Wii games will play on their next gen console so we don't need to have two Nintendo consoles sitting by our TV.

Wiiiiii!

Good thing the prices of Flat panel TV's are going down!

Always looked at nintendo as a good kids gaming console. Maybe there will be a new Conkers with the new Wii?

@Coolice I don't think your should return it the "Wii 2" is not coming until sometime in 2012 (I would bet Q2) so it is a ways off.
