NVIDIA Updates SHIELD With Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, Console Mode, Tons of New Titles

NVIDIA's on a bit of a rampage today, and in this particular situation, a rampage is something to look forward to. The company's gaming-focused SHIELD was already pretty incredible (our review is here), but it's getting even better today, and if you've been holding off and waiting to see if the SHIELD would turn into a must-have prior to the holidays... wait no more.

NVIDIA has announced a monumental SHIELD update today, with the over-the-air update delivering the latest build of Android (v4.3 Jelly Bean) to the handheld console. As if that weren't enough, NVIDIA also launched GameStream in order to bring more PC titles to streaming devices. Wait, need more? How about SHIELD Gamepad Mapper, which turns touch-based Android games into ones that can be enjoyed with SHIELD’s console-quality controls.

Alongside that Android update comes Console Mode, which turns SHIELD into a portable living room game console. Users will be able to pair up a Bluetooth controller, kick back on the couch, indulge in Android games, browse the Web, and watch your favorite movies all in native HD at 1080p.

To celebrate the official release of GameStream, for a limited time NVIDIA will offer up to $100 off SHIELD plus free copies of “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag,” “Splinter Cell: Blacklist” and “Batman: Arkham Origins” with the purchase of select GeForce GTX graphics cards.

Looks like the holiday shopping season, at least in the gaming realm, just got a lot more interesting.

Talk about a massive update... very impressive, NVIDIA.

Agreed.. SHIELD makes systems like the OUYA console seem pretty blah.

Also something to consider is that this device is now more up to date than majority of actual android handsets. Yeah OUYA maybe cheap but this just makes the different price point way worth it. Plus the OUYA seems to be stale lately. I havent heard of any updates or any news on that thing in a while. It was a bit to ambitious. There were a lot of promises made that just werent met. Also the new feature with the bluetooth controller basically makes the OUYA invalid and moot at this point except for the price.
