Microsoft to Offer XP -> 7 Upgrades

Tacitly acknowledging the problems its had getting people to adopt Windows Vista vs. Windows XP, Microsoft said on Tuesday that it will be selling upgrade versions from Windows XP to Windows 7.

However, the upgrade will really only apply to pricing; there won't be a way to do an in-place install of Windows 7 over Windows XP. Instead, the end user will have to do a fresh install of Windows 7.

In an email, a company spokeswoman said:
"Regarding XP, customers can purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license to move from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, they will need to do a clean installation of Windows 7."
It's unclear what the pricing would be for such an upgrade. It would definitely be more expensive than an upgrade from Windows Vista.

Personally, we don't care about the lack of an in-place upgrade option. For something like this, wiping the hard drive and starting from scratch, despite the "pain," is a far better option.

Guess my 2 XP disks are still worth a lil somethin. Maybe I'm missing something, but how will this upgrade work if it'll require a fresh install of 7. Will the XP key need to be entered perhaps?

Regardless, I'm sold on 7 and will ultimately get it in some form or another.

With XP you had to pop in your 2000 disk, but with Vista you had to start the disk from inside a XP install.

Microsoft sure provide vague details! This sounds great, but like you Bob, I'd rather do a fresh install (and on a new PC/harddrive if possible) to avoid problems, especially as my  PC is incapable of running Vista, let alone Windows 7!

7 actually has a bit lower demands that Vista.
