Microsoft Cuts Prices on Select Windows 8 Tablets and Convertibles

Windows 8 devices haven't been able to reinvigorate a slumping PC market to this point, but if Microsoft keeps slashing prices, perhaps things will change. If you pop your head into the Microsoft Store online, you'll discover several recently discounted tablets and convertibles, including one that's been marked down $400.

Which one? Samsung's ATIV Smart PC 500T tablet/notebook hybrid with AT&T 4G LTE. The 11.6-inch Windows 8 convertible wields a touchscreen panel with a surprisingly affordable $499 price tag, down significantly from $899. It also has an Intel Atom Z2760 processor clocked at 1.80GHz, 2GB of LPDDR2-800MHz memory, 64GB solid state drive, microSD card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, a micro HDMI port, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a few other odds and ends.

HP Envy X2

If that doesn't tickle your fancy, there are several other models with reduced price tags, including the following:
  • Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T: $999 (down from $1,200)
  • Asus Taichi 21-UH51 Touchscreen Ultrabook: $1,199 (down from $1,299)
  • HP Envy X2 11-G012NR Touchscreen Ultrabook: $599 (down from $849)
  • Toshiba Satellite U925T-S2130 Convertible Ultrabook: $799 (down from $1,149)

Like the Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T highlighted above, the HP Envy system stands out as a particularly good buy at its reduced price. It's essentially a premium Ultrabook for a fistful of mainstream dollars.

With Android being so cheap they have to make the price competitive.

I don't think Android being so cheap is the primary issue. I think it's a failure to market these effectively. The launch was underwhelming, and the commercials they've been putting out have been terrible so far.

In fact, the nexus ads are much, much better targeted and informative. The Windows ads just show that there is no benefit to owning a surface product.

Windows 8 is a good OS .. I have no idea why no one likes it.. if you give it time, you will realize it is a good OS. Yes the price should go below 400 though b4 i can get one :(

I agree with you it is a good OS but just not for anything without a touchscreen. I bought two keys for Windows 8 Pro and used one of them on my laptop and while I enjoyed it breathed some more life into my 4 year old laptop since it is snappier than Windows 7, I just can't bring myself to use it on my Gaming rig. Also while I do not mind learning shortcuts and everything I did not like having my start menu for when I plug in my wireless mouse to just browse on it. I ended up paying $5 for Stardock to give me back my start button.

Overall like I said it is a good OS but just not to replace Windows 7 on a desktop but the couple of people that have it on a tablet or convertible said they love it.

I love the OS, I love the phone and i love the tablet. When I bring my tablet to the family dinner the kids love playing on the surface and they all have ipad and iphones. They picked it up pretty easy in fact.
