Micro Center Announces Own Brand SandForce SSD for $100

Popular retailer Micro Center is laying claim to the world's first brick-and-mortar branded SandForce solid state drive (SSD), which is actually the company's second generation SSD. But unlike Micro Center's first batch, these latest drives come built around the venerable SandForce SF-1200 controller. And as far as SSDs go, pricing isn't all that bad either -- the 64GB drive sells for an introductory price of $100. Stocking stuffer, anyone?

"We're excited to offer Micro Center customers our second generation, high performance solid state drive with the top-rated controller in the industry—the SandForce SF-1200 Processor," said Ed Mershad, Micro Center Vice President and International Products Sourcing Manager. "We think the combination of great Micro Center support and service, award winning SandForce technology, and an introductory $99.99 price will open the door to mass-market adoption of SSDs in client PC and laptop applications."

All 23 Micro Center locations carry the new drive, though don't fret if you don't happen to live near one -- this one's available through Micro Center's online catalog as well, and for the same price. In exchange for spending a C-note, you get a 64GB SSD capable of read and write speeds up to 250MB/s, making this one of the better deals around.

Yeah Baby! That's the kind of things that have to happen to get the SSD Price Wall torn down! I call it a good start.

It's a start, but It will only mean something when some of the bigger, more trusted brands like Intel and OCZ and such reach that price point, because that's when the race starts.

Nice of Micro Center to introduce SSD's into their stores. They're really good computer stores BTW.

This will certainly mark the day when the brewing of a war started to happen.

I have found my 128gb is the perfect size for games programs and OS.... I even have another 80gb free at the moment and I have about 4-5 games on it.

I have a 60GB OCZ Vertex-II and it's barely enough to get by on. I have to install my games and data on a pair of 1TB WD Blacks.

I do see a totally impressive change in performance and it's given me 'spring fever' to get more of them, and larger sizes too.

128GB would be just fine for me, and larger would be sweet.
