MSI Hurls R7970 Lightning Graphics Card into Product Lineup

Contrary to popular belief, lightning can strike twice in the same place. It's certainly struck MSI a number of times, which today announced the release of its R7970 Lightning edition graphics card featuring an all-new 'Unlocked Digital Power Architecture.' What that means is that it sports an unlocked BIOS, a Digital PWM Controller, and an enhanced power design, all of which are things that will appeal to overclockers looking to squeeze every ounce of performance available.

Going through them one by one, MSI says a single click unlocks the BIOS to remove all protections for extreme overclocking. The Digital PWM Controller offers more stable and precise voltage for fine tune overclocking, and the enhanced power design boils down to twice the power output for "maximum OC potential," MSI says.

The card itself is an AMD Radeon HD 7970 with 3GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 5,600MHz on a 384-bit bus. The GPU clockspeed is set at 1,070MHz and is cooled by MSI's dual-fan Twin Frozr IV cooler with dust removal technology to prevent dust bunnies from taking refuge.

Perhaps one of the more innovative features is a GPU Reactor power supply module that's attached to the back of the GPU. It increases current volume by 88 percent, reduces power supply noise by 13 percent, and improves overclocking stability, MSI says.

No word yet on how much the R7970 Lightning costs or when it will go on sale.
