Line6 Converts Your iPhone/iPod touch Into MIDI Recorder

Line6 Converts Your iPhone/iPod touch Into MIDI Recorder

We've heard "there's an app for that" countless times now, but is there an accessory for that? If "that" is talking about a MIDI interface, well, there is now. Line6--which is well known throughout the guitar and music industry as a high-quality company that products guitars, amps, effects and accessories--has just introduced the MIDI Mobilizer, which is said to be the only one of its kind.

It's the most portable MIDI system ever, and it's compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch (all models). When connected to the Dock Connector port, it can be used to play, record and backup MIDI information anywhere; it basically transforms your iPhone or iPod touch into an on-the-go MIDI capsule, which will enable you to record quick song ideas or back up the settings of your MIDI gear on the fly.

Of course, this couldn't be compatible with the Apple devices without a device to go with it, so the MIDI Memo Recorder is available to record and play back any MIDI data. And because of the Mail app, you're able to send files to collaborators. Have a look at the video demo below if you're still unsure, but chances are this is all you if you're a music lover and an iPod touch/iPhone owner.

LINE 6 ANNOUNCES MIDI MOBILIZER The only MIDI interface for Apple® iPhone™ and iPod touch™

CALABASAS, Calif.—March 1, 2010—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, announced today the release of MIDI Mobilizer™, the only MIDI interface for Apple iPhone and iPod touch.

“We’re very excited to announce MIDI Mobilizer, the first MIDI interface of its kind,” remarked Marcus Ryle, SVP of New Business Development at Line 6.  “It will connect MIDI musicians to the most portable platform ever, and allow them to play, record, and store any MIDI information.”

MIDI Mobilizer, a low-profile piece of hardware that fits into the standard 30-pin connector of an iPhone and iPod touch, together with MIDI Memo Recorder, the free app available for download at the Apple App Store, will present MIDI musicians with a host of solutions related to performing, recording and data backup.

MIDI Mobilizer is compatible with millions of pieces of classic and modern MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) devices such as synthesizers, digital pianos, effects processors, and even Line 6 guitar amps and POD® products.  Virtually any gear with standard MIDI 5-pin DIN connectors can now be directly connected to an iPhone or iPod touch.

Musicians who rely on computers to store and recall MIDI data during performances will celebrate the ease and reduced setup time afforded by an iPhone or iPod touch, and the simple interface of MIDI Memo Recorder.  Plus, no longer will musicians need to travel with the extra weight and fragility of a computer.

The size and simplicity of MIDI Mobilizer make it ideal for inspiration capture as well as performance support.  Whenever inspiration strikes, MIDI Mobilizer will allow for the capture and review of even the most fleeting of keyboard ideas. Recorded inspirations can then be emailed as an SMF (Standard MIDI File) and opened and edited within virtually any Mac or PC-based digital audio workstation.

MIDI Mobilizer can also be employed as a safety net for performing musicians. During equipment failure, or when using rented gear for a gig, MIDI parameter data stored on an iPhone or iPod touch can be imported into replacement keyboards or other MIDI equipment to quickly restore the exact settings and sounds needed.  MIDI Mobilizer is the most portable and affordable solution for transferring MIDI information.

MIDI Mobilizer ships March 19, 2010.

Definitely seems like a neat product. It would be neat to try out (since I do use a MIDI synthesizer).

OK this has maybe an audience of a few thousand people. I mean there are a lot of people that play music, but not a lot of people who will need for there smart phone or media player to plug into their midi so they can record a 5 second musical idea.

MIDI? really...I thought that format was extinct...lol.

The MIDI protocol is still widely used. MIDI In/Out ports are getting extinct now in favor of the minimum of USB 1.1.

Isn't MIDI that amazingly advanced new technology for 1982?

The sound format that was a leap forward for the 8Bit games on the commodore 64, and Atari?

Not really up on Music porting and sound formats. I just use them when needed for animation, and only then do I look up the best format to use when editing the final scenes.

The question here would be is this really necessary? If you are using your MOOG, wouldn't you already have connections that link it to the PC for all your sound editing needs? There are also apps out there that allow you to create this stuff on laptops and other portable devises, much like a virtual keyboard.

This seems like one of those devises that are kind of a flash in the pan. like an RF converter for Dolby Digital. It was needed when the 5.1 format first came out. Then it was a necessity on all receivers and processors since then. Yeah I know if only I waited a year to buy the next version Laserdisc player, it would have been integrated :P

MIDI is still widely used with Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software, as it's an easy way to trigger sound samples / other audio events. Unless you're recording live sounds, more than likely MIDI is being used in some way.

Also remember that MIDI is not technically a sound file in itself - it's just a series of instructions on how an audio file should be played.

great idea but its about half the size of the iPhone itself. That is actually big for an add-on piece of hardware.

I wish the video player wouldn't start playing automatically - it's annoying when we're making comments and the video keeps loading. :(
