Well, the ultraportable market just got a lot more exciting. And a lot
more varied. The IdeaPad U260 was just introduced by Lenovo
, and it's
said to be the world's first 12.5" ultraportable notebook
this provides a 16:9 widescreen aspect ration on a 12" (or so) display,
making it more suitable for watching widescreen movies on planes and
such. It's also a rather luxurious machine, with a magnesium-aluminum
alloy real metal cover, leather-patterned palm rest and glass touchpad.
This isn't designed for bargain shoppers. Instead, it's designed for
those who place a high value on style, and like Apple's unibody design
approach, Lenovo has used an insert-molding injection technology for
their own one-piece design. The leather-patterend palm rest is also
interesting; it's not often that we see laptops with any cushion at all
on the palm rest, usually due to heat build-up. The touchpad also
supports multi-gesture inputs, and it will be available in both mocha
brown and clementine orange colors.
Internally, there's a Core i5 processor, 320GB hard drive, up to 4GB of
DDR3 memory, Intel's Advanced Cooling Technology and Lenovo's Active
Protection System to guard against data loss in drops. It ships with
Windows 7 Home Premium, a webcam (and Skype) and Dolby audio. The U260
will ship this month and start at $899.
