LaCie Brings USB 3.0 Support To The Mac

USB 3.0 has been out for awhile now. Loads of notebooks and desktops are shipping each day with USB 3.0 support, and while we still wish that each and every PC would make the jump to 3.0, at least progress is being made. But there's one qualifier there: the only USB 3.0 machines shipping are Windows-based PCs. In other words, no Mac is supporting USB 3.0 today, even the newest MacBook Air machines.

Apple has shown no interest in jumping on the USB 3.0 bandwagon, but that doesn't mean that Mac users are in agreement. Creative professionals who transfer lots of data to external drives definitely have a need for USB 3.0, and today, LaCie is making it a reality. The company has just announced the release of a custom USB 3.0 driver, one that's made to work with LaCie's line of USB 3.0 expansion cards. So you won't be able make any Mac into one that supports USB 3.0 unless you invest in a PCIe expansion card from LaCie. But at least there's an option now! Now, if Apple would just make it standard...

LaCie's quality of design/build is suspect in my experience. I had a 500GB FireWire 400/800 backup drive that failed and they blamed it on my house current and refused to replace it. BTW: everything else in the house still works fine,.....go figure. Then it happened to my son's identical backup drive and they told him the same thing, faulty house power. I had him send me the unit and upon inspection, they both had a burned trace in the same place on the power circuitry board. I picked up two cheap-azz enclosures from newegg and pulled the drives out of the LaCie enclosures. The drives both work fine now and have been doing so for almost a year too,...........
