Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS Puts Pro Tools Into Consumer Hands

Iomega may not have the name recognition that Western Digital and Seagate share, but it's gaining serious ground in the storage marketplace. Hot on the heels of its four-bay StorCenter Pro ix4-200r NAS introduction, the company is issuing a smaller, green version for home users and small businesses. The compact StorCenter ix2-200 aims to put enterprise NAS features into the hands of consumers, all while improving the unit design.

The drive is being made available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB sizes, with prices starting at under $270. Iomega claims that its user interface is incredibly easy to grasp, and the remote access features should make sharing files over the web/network a peace of cake. Just in case you outgrow the built-in storage, there's also three USB 2.0 sockets for adding extra space externally. You'll also notice a few more advanced features like iSCSI support, device-to-device replication and video surveillance, along with expected extras like a print server, Gigabit Ethernet and Time Machine support.

Where do you insert the Zip disks?

Seriously, it's got some good features - though I'm not sure if those features would be worth $180 over what it would cost me to just buy a drive and install free software with similar functions on my existing server.  I think they should chop $50-70 or so off the price.

Also, they're charging you $430 for an extra 3TB on the 4TB model, which is basically like giving them an extra $100 for nothing - assuming their only cost are the drives, assembly, and extra shipping weight. :\

They do seem a little cheaper than the hp and other more mainstream NAS devices though.

Easy to use UI and a low cost is probably the two biggest draws for a small or home business. As long as they hold up well and don't have users frustrated, it should be a good move. I haven't seen anything out of iOmega since zip disks, like 3vil pointed out. :P
