Intel Announces Bay Trail Power NUC Tiny PC Starting At $128

You have to love the tiny NUC (Next Unit of Computing) from Intel, a diminutive machine that measures just 116.6 x 112.0 x 51.5mm yet offers a surprising amount of computing power. The chipmaker has a new NUC kit available, and for the performance that the DN2820FYKH offers, it starts at just $128.

The NUC sports a dual-core Intel Celeron N2820 (Bay Trail) processor at 2.39GHz, integrated Intel HD graphics (up to 756MHz), and up to 8GB of 1333/1600MHz RAM (downclocked to 1066MHz in a single DIMM).

You can slap in any 2.5-inch SATA drive, be it a spacious HDD or a speedy SSD, and there’s a PCIe half-length mini-card connector that’s preinstalled with a wireless mini-card. The NUC offers 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, WiDi, and gigabit Ethernet for connectivity, and ports include one USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, and HDMI. There’s a headphone/mic jack and support for 8-channel audio on board, too.

This edition of the NUC also has a visual boot manager so you can pick and choose your OS. Intel pitches the NUC as ideal for a personal productivity PC, which might be pushing it just a bit, but it does seem just about perfect for home media applications--there’s an infrared sensor for a remote control and a bracket for a VESA mount--and other uses such as signage, a personal cloud server, and more.

Did we mention that it starts at a mere $128?

This will likely replace the existing Celeron-driven NUC - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102004. And with a large enough SATA HDD (such as this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178420), it could most certainly be a micro-productivity - not gaming - box, running a Linux distribution or even Windows 8.1 - therefore, not even close to pushing it. (You could park it alongside a console or STB, using a spare HDMI-in, and hang any wireless USB keyboard and mouse of your choice off it.)
