HTC Living High on the Hog, Quarterly Profit Nearly Doubles
You have to hand it to HTC for not only recognizing a potentially good business opportunity when it arrives, but successfully capitalizing on it. We're of course talking about Google's Android platform, and HTC has been riding that green gravy train ever since it left the station. Now the world's No. 4 smartphone maker, HTC nearly doubled up its profits in the third-quarter, the handset maker announced on Wednesday.
HTC managed to rake in a cool $360 million in unaudited net profit for July through September. To put that into perspective, HTC claimed a net profit of $184.5 million during the same quarter one year ago. It's safe to say it's been a good, if not extraordinary year for one of Android's biggest smartphone pushers.
And this could be just the beginning. Market research firm Gartner thinks Google's Android platform will grow to become the world's second most popular mobile OS for cell phones this year. Previous estimates pegged that milestone taking another two years to achieve, but with Android getting funkier (in a good way) with each release, and companies like HTC and Samsung aggressively churning out smartphones built around the open-source OS, Android continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.
