Google Maps Updated with 'Skyfall' Island Japan Terrain

The latest in the Bond film series, "Skyfall," was certainly one to remember. And not all of those memories were pleasant. The head villain's island lair was a particularly spooky place, and sure enough, it's roots are grown from a real place. The decaying wasteland depicted in the film was a shadow of Hashima off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. Due to its unique flat shape, the island is most widely known in Japan by its nickname Gunkanjima — aka “Battleship Island.” In some circles, it's called "Dead Island."

According to Google: "Starting in the late 19th century, Hashima served as a coal mining facility and residential complex for 5,000 people. After the decline of coal mining in the 1970s, however, the island became completely abandoned, only opening up again to tourists in 2009. Hashima has transformed into an eerie tourist destination where you can see a once thriving town decaying and totally devoid of life. Apparently, Hashima’s buildings are deteriorating so rapidly that you can hear parts of the concrete collapse as the wind blows from the ocean."

Google actually sent an employee to the island with a Street View backpack in order to capture its condition and a panoramic view for all to see in 360 degrees. You can take a virtual walk across the island now, and Google also used its Business Photos technology to let you peek into the abandoned buildings, complete with ancient black-and-white TVs and discarded soda bottles. Welcome to one of the most creepy places technology has ever brought to your computer screen.

I just saw Skyfall with my wife today ( I had already seen it in the theater). My wife asked me if this was a real place but I thought it was an actual movie set with digital effects added in. I was wrong. Though these particular scenes of this island were creepy, what was even creepier was the way Javier Bardem narrates the "two rats in the end" story. That gave me the chills.

That has to be one of the best performances of a villain, aside from Ledger's Joker, that I've seen in a long time. He ranks up there with Scaramanga - The Man with the Golden Gun.
