Google Guy Crashes iPhone 5 Launch Party by Announcing 500 Million Android Shipments

Let's face it, Apple launch parties have become a big deal, and nothing short of a meteor crashing into Earth will disrupt the iPhone 5 event that's to take place later today. Whatever. If you're a die-hard Android fan, don't fret, your open source platform of choice is still finding ways to make headlines. Yesterday it was because Amazon cut the price of Samsung's Galaxy S III device in half to $100, and today Android is making waves for the number of activations it's accumulated to date.

According to Hugo Barra, Director of Product Management for Android, the little green robot has been activated hundreds of millions of times so far.

"Today is a big day for Android... 500 million devices activated globally, and over 1.3 million added every single day. Oh, and btw, the Jelly Bean statue is back in our front yard," Barra stated in a Google+ post.

Android Statues

First and foremost, let's go ahead and acknowledge Barra's brazen claim that "today is a big day for Android." Like everyone else with an Internet connection, he knows full well this is Apple's day, and he deserves props for how he worded his post. Well played, Mr. Barra.

Secondly, 500 million activations? With 1.3 million added every single day? That's incredible, and it puts Android on pace to add nearly 475 million activations each year. By this time next year, there's a good chance Android activations will have doubled. Back in June, Barra announced that the rate was 1 million per day.

The iPhone 5 launch will inevitably swing attention over to Apple, but it's clear there's no slowing Android at this point.

Oh. So he just posted that on Google+. He didn't actually go to an iPhone 5 launch party and announce it with a megaphone or something, as implied by the title of this article.

Dam that is impressive.

Would have prefered to see a guy yelling out why android is better in the middle of the event.
