GM's Pause And Play Radio: It's Like A DVR For Your Car Stereo

GM's Pause And Play Radio: It's Like A DVR For Your Car Stereo

Just a few years back, car stereos were fairly lackluster from the factory. To get any sort of serious audio within the automobile, you had to turn to complicated aftermarket installs. At some point between then and now, automakers have seemingly figured out that consumers are demanding more right from the showroom floor, and with Ford integrating SYNC into nearly every car it makes, General Motors had to step up and do something.

That something is Pause and Play, which is a unique new feature that is built into the High Navigation Radio in the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX as well as the Cadillac CTS Jukebox and Navigation radio. Basically, the feature allows you to hear something on your radio, mash pause when you get to your destination, and hop back in to hear the rest. This is also handy if you receive a call right in the middle of a heated debate on your favorite talk radio show. You know if we're talking about you.

Currently, the feature only has enough memory to store up to 20 minutes of audio for play back at a later time. It's also scheduled to come to the new Buick Regal and Chevrolet Cruze in due time, but there's no mention of a longer buffer time in the future. Now, if only there were an easy way to transport missed clips from the radio to your iPod as you step out of the car for work, we could really see this taking off.

We just have to find the HD or other storage medium which would probably take me 30 minutes tops (follow the cord works usually) not to mention it's most likely directly under the steering wheel somewhere.Pop that puppy out throw in a terabyte replacement and your good for years at maybe 100 bucks unless its an SSD which I doubt, but who knows.

Lol, it could be non-removable flash storage. If it is removable storage, I'd be very impressed with GM's foresight.

Unfortuantely "GM" and "foresight" are two words I haven't used in the same sentence in quite some time, so I'm naturally pessimistic. Pause and play however seems like a great idea. If you were able to transfer the recording onto your Ipod/mp3 player, do you suppose you'd be breaking some copyright law?

Next up, GM gets sued by Tivo over time-shifting patents.

I think one of my co-workers has something like this in his portable XM radio unit. It docks in the car and works like a regular XM radio but he has his setup to record certain sport shows so he can listen on the ride home where he goes through the NYC subway where there is no XM reception. Nice to see GM and Ford making improvements on this though.

You're referring to the Pioneer Inno, it allows you to record songs off XM radio, and comes with 1 GB (~40-50 hours of music).

Also, they got sued by the RIAA, go figure.

Yes it's interesting, but I still don't see a reason for something of such a limited size.

figures RIAA would sue there own A77 if the didn't have to get 2 lawyers.

This is a wonderful article. The things given are unanimous and needs to be appreciated by everyone.

Yeah, it's a good idea and will be appreciated, though the 20 min limit is too short as already indicated by someone. If they allowed additional storage, or if there was an easy way to transfer the media onto your mp3 player, this would a home run for GM!

Yeah and FORD seems to have this same concept however with some size to it if I am to believe the commercials where they say you can just save your CD's to the car. That is the way this should be done. Come one with enhanced compression like MP4 or something your sounds quality would be sweet and save days of music on a few gigs. So 20 or 40 gigs in a car would save every music CD you had and still be half empty.

Continuous innovation makes car stereos go radical not just in design but also on functionality. Digital stuff are just way to fully loaded today, every car is very mobile and you can even sync it to the latest ipod or mobile phone. dodge Dakota parts should be set with this kind of car stereo, everyone would enjoy this for sure.

Great concept. The design is very innovative as well. It should come with a sound deadener as well.

I would like to see someone incorporate a DVR type function to record your favorite songs right from the radio.
